When Google’s Employees Become SEO

For a long time now, many SEO’s have been playing with the question “what would happen if Matt Cutts quit Google and joined an SEO firm?” After all, Matt leads Google quality team which is mainly in charge of fighting spam and exploits.

While that hasn’t happened (yet), NMA reports this week that four guys off Matt’s Ireland crew quit their Google job and went solo to start their own SEO firm…

I am not sure what are the consequences of such a move and it seems as if Google may like to bound such employees by contract from making such moves, but it is sure as hell a very juicy move.

SEO Vs. PPC: The Heavyweight Battle Of Internet Marketing

So, you're asking yourself the question online marketers are asking themselves today. Where should I spend most of my time, money, and efforts -- SEO or PPC? The battle has begun.

The conflict begins with too many choices. It's easy to feel lost when new forms of online advertising are constantly emerging. So, where do you start? You hear about social media networks, pay-per-call, blogs and innumerable others as they develop into bigger markets, but do any of these choices make sense? Here's the reality - no matter how many other avenues pop up, the engines still maintain the largest market share of all searches online. It is there that you'd be wisest to invest your money.

Round 1 – Time. When considering which form of Internet marketing to choose, your biggest determinants should be time and efficiency. Depending on how time-sensitive your objective is, it is important to know that the quickest way to drive traffic is through PPC (pay-per-click). You build your campaign, and with the click of a button, you're getting traffic. Changes are immediate, and you have control. SEO (search engine optimization) is quite the opposite, although certainly worth the effort. A couple of things to keep in mind -- it is very important to be patient. Due to the dynamic nature of the engines, time projections are difficult to make. You make a change, and it often takes months to see results. Also, you need to keep in mind that optimizing your Web site is an ongoing effort. As the nature of search engine algorithms, your site might need “adjustments.” But the end result -- the possibility of increasing your site's natural rankings and getting a high volume of free traffic -- is well worth the time spent

Round 2 – Money. You often hear people saying that “SEO is so expensive!” But is it really? Let's compare it to PPC. Granted, SEO often requires a considerable upfront investment, but consider the payoff. An optimization professional recommends (and often makes) changes that are intended to increase a site's natural rankings -- which translates into free traffic. Although you can control your site's rankings via PPC, you will always have to pay for them, which most often ends up being many times more expensive than the SEO investment. Anyone can start a PPC campaign, but the challenge is getting your site ranked in the first pages of the engines. Having the first spot or even the 5th or 6th in Google for your keywords is like having a huge billboard in the middle of Times Square. The traffic is intense and the exposure is priceless! We can say the same about a great ranking on a PPC campaign, but remember one thing -- you will always have to pay for it. Free clicks in sponsored search? Never.

Round 3 – Effort We know SEO takes more time and effort than creating and maintaining a PPC campaign. Yet, it's important to recognize that a considerable effort is required with both. Optimizing a Web site is like trying to climb to the top of a mountain. Once you start, you can't stop until you reach the top. You work for hours at a time on optimization, with your goal in sight, and then rest while the engine crawlers find and assess your improvements. You see the results of those changes via movement of your site's natural rankings, and then start up the mountain, again. The creation of a PPC campaign takes only a few steps -- but to make it successful, consistent maintenance is required. Rather than investing hours of work at once with down time in between, PPC requires almost daily attention and maintenance. It may look simple from the outside, but there are so many small things can make a huge difference in the success of a campaign. This is the rivalry of the Internet marketing world and getting more and more intense. Who's watching? We all are.

Each tactic, whether it is SEO or PPC, has its positives and negatives. Consider the following:

1 - Business Growth. SEO and PPC have opened the doors to small business and fueled fast- growing enterprises. A company can make a name for itself in no time if it pays enough per keyword to be in Google's top ranked positions or has a better optimized Web site than its competitors. For e-commerce clients, this has been an incredible way to market and sell their products. Think about how much renting a locale can cost a business per month and how much traffic will actually go into your store. Now, think about the traffic that exists online, in which you can target either by city, state, region, or country, and how much more affordable it can be!

2 - Brand Awareness. When launching an Internet marketing campaign, you're not only marketing your product or service but acting on a form of public relations. Many PR firms are reaching out to Internet marketing firms to help their client's efforts. When deciding whether or not PPC is viable, consider both the cost per click, and the number of people who will see your ad (whether or not they clicked). It's free exposure, and what's better?

3 – Traffic. Traffic will make or break your online business. If you're not generating traffic, you're not generating sales. The engines can deliver the highest volume of traffic if positioned in the top rankings. You already know this! Now, the important factor is driving qualified traffic to your Web site. This all comes down to the SEO and PPC determinants, such as choosing the right keywords, ads and other elements that are driving the traffic you want to ensure your online efforts are successful. One major factor of failing campaigns is insufficient research. Research is crucial to creating a winning campaign to compete in a growing market.

It's time to start considering which type of marketing will best suit the needs of your business. If you're still debating whether it's the right time to get serious about marketing online, consider that your competition is most likely making their presence felt there already.

Will Googlebomb Algo Affect SEO Contests?

There’s news going around that Google has or introduced a new algorithm designed to eliminate Googlebombs (or linkbombs as they should be called).

In case you are not familiar, a linkbomb is an attempt to influence search rankings by pointing a contextual phrase - like “miserable failure” - to a site you want associated with that phrase. The goal is to get enough links using the chosen contextual phrase pointing to the targeted destination site. The more of these links you have, the higher the probability search results would adjust their results accordingly.

The most popular of these linkbombs was probably the “miserable failure” campaign, which resulted in current US President George Bush’s biography page receiving the top search result for the phrase in question. With the introduction of Google’s new anti-linkbomb algorithm, results for the “miserable failure” query have changed: a BBC article discussing the original “miserable failure” linkbomb is now the first position result.

Furthermore, President Bush II’s biography page is no longer on the first page results.

The question I’ve been asking is, “will Google’s new anti-linkbomb algorithm affect current and future SEO competitions?” The reason I ask is because most SEO competitions ask the contestants to rank highly for a chosen phrase and the most effective to do so is with contextual backlinks. For instance, if you want a site to rank highly for the phrase “awesome site,” you point as many links containing the phrase to the site as possible.

Now because of the new Google algorithm designed to combat linkbombs, there are a couple of SEO contests that may have a difficult time achieving the desired results:

First, Threadwatch is having a competition to see who can get the first position for the phrase “Dave Pasternack”. The webmaster doing so by noon on March 1st will win $1000. Will the new Google algo allow Threadwatch’s competition to reach its full potential or will it render these efforts as wasted? If Google “ignores” linkbomb campaigns, winning an SEO contest is even harder.

Another competition that may be affected by Google’s decision is the 2007 SEO World Championship - who is essentially having the same type of contest as Threadwatch. The keyword phrase to rank for is “GlobalWarming Awareness2007″. However, because the competition includes Yahoo and MSN as well (not just Google), participants may still be able to employ their linkbombs… just don’t expect big changes in Google’s SERPs.

SEO: Rocket Science? Cancer Cure?

Maybe they should call it something other than link love...

SEOs and ClickZ readers are doubtless aware of the kerfluffle recently over whether search optimization is rocket science -- or not.

It all started when Dave Pasternack wrote a piece saying it isn't.

The experts -- and the blogosphere -- lost no time in taking sides. Danny Sullivan's in the oh-yes-it-is camp. Pasternack's boss, and ClickZ columnist Kevin Lee is firmly on Dave's side, both here and here. Ditto Mike Grehan.

These are the articles, mind you. Not the flame wars.

You can take sides, too. So heated is the debate that Threadwatch has turned the whole thing into an SEO contest to see can rank #1 on Google for the term "Dave Pasternack."

The gauntlet has been thrown, and Did-It is countering. Kevin Lee has issued an appeal to marketers to link to Pasternack's bio on the company Web site. I notice they've also added that link and name to the site footer.

Did-It promises to donate the $1,000 prize to the American Cancer Society should they win it.

Optimize Your Site For Free Traffic

You’ve just created a website and registered a domain name. You have an awesome product and great content. You think man any day now I am going to get a bunch of people checking out my site. But that day doesn’t come. Sure you get a few visitors each day and maybe even average 20 or 30 unique visitors. But this is never going to get your business off the ground.

Let’s face it there are 2 kinds of traffic on the internet. The paid kind which comes from advertising and pay per click (PPC Google AdWords). And there’s the free kind which comes from the search engines. I don’t know about you but I would much rather prefer to receive sustainable free traffic then the paid kind.

SEO - What is it?

So how do we get free traffic and what’s involved. Free traffic comes from search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN. There are others but these are the major ones. People use search engines to find products and services. In fact most successful online business’ report the majority of the traffic they receive to their sites comes from the search engines. And unless your site appears on the first few pages of a search chances are you will not be noticed very often.

I don’t care if your site provides services, products, or information, search engines are a primary method of navigation for almost all Internet users.

Search Engine Optimization or SEO for short. Is in fact a process of optimizing pages of your website and make them search engine friendly so that they can be positioned in the top of search results for particular keywords.

How Search Engines Function

Search engines run automated programs, called “bots” or “spiders” that visit websites from all over the internet and gather information regarding web pages that are searched by the people. This is otherwise known as having your website crawled.

After crawling the WebPages on your site, the gathered content is stored in a huge searchable database of documents which make up the search engine’s “index”. The search engine arranges this information in various searchable fields, so that when a queried the search engine can scan billions of documents and completes this in fractions of a second.

The results which are displayed are the ones that most accurately portray the information related to the keywords that the user has searched for. A match is determined if the terms or phrase is found on the page in the manner specified by the user. Every search engine has its own algorithm (a mathematical equation commonly used for sorting) and matching criteria to provide the user with the result, so the result may vary for the same keyword in different search engines.

Ranking Results:-
Results are ranked based on a number of different criteria. They start from the top of the list being the most relevant to the bottom which is the least relevant. One of the key most important factors is keyword relevance. And in order to rank highly based on keyword relevance you need to have pages related to a specific keyword phrase.

Steps to SEO
Bellow is the list of general steps to optimize the website in order to get the higher rankings in the search engines.

Keywords Analysis:-

Keywords are words or phrases the potential customer may use to search any business for their needs. For example if you are a taxation service provider in USA, “Tax Refund USA”, is called a keyword. The first step in Search Engine Optimization is identifying the important keywords for your business. You can determine this list by analyzing your business & your competitors, in order to determine which words should be targeted. Here is an example of a list of keywords for the taxation service provider in USA,

Tax Return USA
Tax Refund USA

USA TaxRapid
Tax Refund
Online Tax USA

Keyword Analysis also includes looking at how many people search for a given term to determine how popular it is and hence its importance. Based on this keyword analysis optimization of the given web site is done to get you the best possible rank on the search engines.

On page Off Page Optimization:-

There are 2 types of optimization that must be performed. First is On Page. This essentially means things that will be done to the coding of your existing pages. After analyzing the keywords you must optimize the web site based on these keywords. Web site optimization includes:
Meta Tags Optimization, Keyword Enrichment and Interlinking of site pages. First optimize your sites meta tags. Change this to include keywords which you are looking to target. Then carefully add a blending of those keywords within your websites content so search engines can read them. At last the interlinking of your website’s pages is established, so the search engines can easily “crawl” your web site to read and rank them based on your keywords.

Link Exchange:-
Now for Off Page Optimization. This is one of the most important and powerful step in the SEO process. Search engines count Link popularity when ranking the site. So the number of incoming links to a site from related sites is very important. These back links can be achieved by exchanging links with other sites. Seek out other high ranking sites that are related to your site and ask for a reciprocal link. This will help you greatly.

Paid Traffic

Pay Per Click Campaigns:-

The search engine results pages contain not only listings of documents found to be relevant to the user’s query, but other content, including paid advertisements. “Pay Per Click” - PPC is the secondary source results for search engines. Google, for example, serves up ads from its well-known AdWords Program. In short for PPC, we have to pay for the advertisement we want to display on search engine results. The nice thing about Pay Per Click is that one only needs to pay when someone clicks on his/her advertisement. But to get best result from this Pay Per Click Campaign, the website needs to be combined with good website optimization. Be careful when using this type of traffic generation. I have seen many people spend many thousands of dollars/month for this type of exposure.

So there you have it. Traffic the free kind and the paid kind. And we all agree that the free kind is the best traffic to get. Just imagine how your business would succeed with hundreds of targeted visitors each day who find your site based on a key phrase entered into a major search engine.

Web Designers And SEO - The Lowdown

"Why Shouldn't I Have My Web Designer Do Our SEO?"

This is a question we often hear from companies that are playing devil's advocate during a site redesign that also needs optimization for better visibility on search engines. It's sort of a, "As long as you're under the hood, can you fix that other thing" perspective. Since the site design and code are being reworked, why not sprinkle some keywords in there?

This is a logical attitude for business or site owners who think of search engine optimization as purely a technical discipline. Too often this perspective is fostered by people in the web design and interactive industry who consume outdated information about SEO.

A 3rd party vendor web designer asked on a recent client conference call, "What about the Florida update?". All I could do is smile and continue talking about latent semantic indexing. Hah, just kidding. We don't spew LSI nonesense.

What we do in those situations is tactfully explain the scope of how and when search engines make updates so that everyone has a better perspective on how outdated the "Floriday update" is without demeaning the web designer's credibility. It's a slippery slope sometimes dealing with the political side of client engagements. You won't get anywhere bashing other vendors, especially if you need them for execution.

Today's SEO is not just about the technical side or about "textbook" SEO. As an example, most web developers and/or designers are not often trained, tasked or interested in doing the kind of competitive marketplace, keyword analysis and creative content strategy that is required to create the foundation of a site optimization project. Web designers are more often than not an invaluable resource for implementing recommendations, but not for setting SEO strategy.

Many times, web designer SEO involves being given a list of keywords by the site owner or someone in marketing and asked to put them in title tags, meta tags, alt text, link text and possibly modifying code so that urls are crawler friendly.

A specialist in search engine optimization is going to have tools for analyzing a keyword marketplace, competitor web sites as well as content recommendations. Keywords are mined from the current client site, competitor sites, mining data from web analytics and the on-site search engine, tools like Keyword Discovery and WordTracker, Google trends and possibly interviews with client front line staff that interact with the target market such as sales people and customer support teams. Most web designers aren't going to have time or the resources to do all that. But they will be instrumental in the implementation of those recommendations.

We employ web design staff on our SEO team and for the most part, we try to avoid doing web design projects because we're so busy fixing web sites made by other designers. Most designers do not make web sites that are not search engine friendly on purpose. Rather, they make web sites that focus on the user experience without regarding the search engine experience. In most cases, the designer is not asked to make the site search engine friendly or optimized in the first place. The business owner doesn't know any better and many times, the web designer doesn't either.

Having a creatively and technically talented web designer is a tremendous resource. Having a creatively and technically talented SEO as well makes it a one-two punch. Now scale that up with a training program, viral marketing specialists, web analytics and top notch account managers skilled in the arts of client and geek diplomacy and you have one heck of a SEO firm.

Can a web designer do SEO? Some can, some won't and some just don't have the time to stay current with SEO methodology. The question is, can they do the kind of SEO that will help build your brand AND increase sales?

What Gone Wrong With Reciprocal Linking

When the Internet was new to me, I was fascinated by following links and going to new sites. It was like an adventure. And when I had my own website the first thing that I wanted to do was to place my site's links on other sites. I began reciprocal linking (trading links with other sites) way back then, but 11 years later things have changed and now I dread getting a "reciprocal link request" in my email inbox. I have a few pet peeves with reciprocal linking, as it is practiced today, and here they are:

1. Most of the Requests are Automated

It used to be flattering to get a link request, knowing that someone had visited your site and wanted to exchange a link. These days most of the requests are done with software and it means that no one has really visited your site. Automation in itself is not bad, but it leads to all kinds of abuses, and it prevents you from picking out the good links from the bad. Even if you have an automated directory to handle link requests, which is what I installed, you will still be swamped with tons of link requests.

2. Most Link Requests are of Extremely Low Quality

The original idea of linking was to provide your own visitors with quality sites where they could visit next. The links were provided as a resource. Today, many sites have been set up only to make monëy from Adsense and other advertising programs. In addition, driven by the need to acquire PageRank many webmasters went into a link gathering frenzy and sent requests to any and all sites whether they were related to their site or not. If a link is to be a resource to visitors of both sites, then the two sites should somehow be related and the sites should be of comparable quality. Most reciprocal link requests fail this test.

3. Links are Buried on Pages Where Human Eyes Will Nevër See Them

In addition to being a resource to your own visitors, you want to exchange links in hopes of getting some targeted traffíc back to your site. It used to be easier; a webmaster would have a site with say ten different pages and one of his pages would be a "links" page. On that page he would display 30 or so links. The link to this page would be prominent in the site's navigation menu. You could be assured of getting some meaningful traffíc if your link was placed on this kind of page.

That has all changed. People now build huge directories of hundreds of categories, stuffed with pages and pages of links. It is extremely unlikely that many visitors will drill down through all the pages and find your site in such a directory.

4. Many of the Link Requests are for "Three Way Links"

I find three-way links "creepy." They work like this, if I link to site A, then they will give a link to my site originating from site B. This is done because Google is supposed to value one-way links more than reciprocal links. I can understand this. If someone links to you without asking you and doesn't request a reciprocal link it means that your site is really good and this is why Google values true one-way links. However, the three-way links proposed by many people are just an attempt to trick the search engines; they are not true one-way links. Sooner or later Google will get wise to such schemes and this kind of effort will yield little benefit to the linking websites.

In addition, I dislike this kind of linking arrangement because you first have to chëck out who you are linking to, and then you are faced with checking another site that is going to link to you. Usually the site where the link to you will be placed is some kind of strange directory, a link-farm.

This is the state of reciprocal linking today. I delete most requests coming into my inbox, and do mass deleting on my automated systems as well. Now I don't want to end on a negative note so here are a few suggestions on how to get quality incoming links without adding another reciprocal link request to the flood that is already out there:

1. Make Your Site so Cool that People Will Link to You Without Asking

People come to the Internet to solve a problem, find a solution and get information. If you can make your website a true resource and a great place where visitors can get the information that they need, then it will not go unnoticed. Even if you have a commercial e-commerce site, it is possible to add reviews, articles and information. This additional information will help your own customers and will be a resource for the entire web. Who knows? Maybe one day you will chëck your referrer logs and see that Wikipedia is linking to you. This is the goal, but it will take some work to achieve it.

2. Get Involved in Blogs and Forums that are Related to Your Field of Expertise

You can learn something from forums and blogs and you can contribute something as well. You can usually leave your url when you make a comment or a posting. If you offer solid advice, you will get a good online reputation and become known as an expert in your field. This newfound recognition as an expert, combined with links from these blogs and forums will be worth much more than low quality reciprocal links.

3. Get into Article Marketing

Article marketing means that you will write articles about your field of interest and distribute them for publication on other websites, blogs and ezines with a link back to your site. Each time your article is published on a website you get a one-way link to your site. As with most good things, this method has been pounced upon by Internet marketers and the net is flooded with a lot of low-quality articles. However, if you produce meaningful articles, you can still get a lot of benefit by distributing your articles.

4. Do Judicious Reciprocal Linking

There is nothing wrong with the idea of websites trading links. However, if you are going to do it, then only link to a site that you think is a good one or has some value for your web visitors. Make sure that your link will be placed on a page that has the potential of sending you some traffíc. Make your request with an email that clearly shows that you are a living and breathing human being and not a robot.

So, instead of adding to the spam-like flood of reciprocal link requests, go about building your own content and start using more reliable methods of increasing the number of incoming links to your site.

The Lady SEO of Romania (Made in Romania Part 3)

From time to time, if you read my blog constantly, you know that I encourage young Romanian netpreneurs to develop their own products.

This time is a little bit different. I found online a great article written by Adriana Iordan. It was a pleasant surprise for me to read his article called "Choosing Keywords Efficiently for SEO".

Just in case you don't know, Adriana is a Web Marketing Manager at Avangate BV, an eCommerce platform for Electronic Software Distribution Service which incorporate an easy to use and secure online payment system plus additional software marketing services and sales tools.

According to Adriana, "Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is paramount for businesses that choose to make themselves known via the Internet. Keyword research and, ultimately, keyword selection are extremely important parts of the overall SEO process".

And she continue:

"There are some basic rules (16) that you need to follow when choosing keywords in order to receive relevant traffic on your web site:

1) Don't use single words. Phrases are better than words.

2) Be relevant. Make sure that the description of your web site reflects what you have to offer.

3) Be a mind reader. Try to anticipate your prospective visitors' needs and meet them.

4) Be specific. Choose keywords with a narrower focus to face less competition.

5) Localize your keywords: make use of your geographical location, but avoid getting too specific. Also, be aware of the differences between words in different locations (e.g. elevator (US) - lift (UK), sweater (US) - jumper (UK). Perform your optimization process accordingly to get the best results.

Good job Adriana... I like your article, I like your style, I like your attitude. I expect to see more from you this year.

The Tactic Of SEO

1. the art of producing illusions as entertainment by the use of sleight of hand, deceptive devices, etc. legerdemain, conjuring-to pull a rabbit out of a hat by magic.

2. the art of producing a desired effect or result through the use of incantation or various other techniques that presumably assure human control of supernatural agencies or the forces of nature.

seo image If you have been scouring the net looking for that out of the box system, or automated piece of software which will help you to rake in those online pounds and dollars then you have no doubt been looking for a little bit of magic.

The more experienced of us realise that like the golden fleece-there is no magic potion for SEO. Fortunately what we do have is a number of tried and tested solutions you can apply to your business model in order to drive the traffic and convert the visitors you need to realise you online goals.

We define the top 10 solutions:

1. Search Engine Optimisation - The term used to describe the marketing technique of preparing a website to enhance its chances of being ranked in the top results of a search engine once a relevant search is undertaken. A number of factors are important when optimising a website, including the content and structure of the websites copy and page layout, the HTML meta-tags and the submission process.

2. Pay Per Click - Advertising model in which advertisers pay for click-throughs to their website. Ads are served based on keywords or themes.

3. Blogging - is the act of writing in ones blog. To blog something is to write about something in one’s blog. This usually involves linking to something the author finds interesting on the internet.

4. RSS - is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Many news-related sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it.

5. Website copywriting - is the art of writing sales and marketing related materials. Copywriting is used in every major area of business such as Sales Letters, Business plans, advertising etc.

6. Affiliate Marketing - is a system of revenue sharing between one site (the affiliate merchant) which features an ad or content designed to drive traffic to another site (the advertiser). The affiliate will receive a fee based on the amount of traffic generated.

7. Web 2.0 - is a term often applied to a perceived ongoing transition of the World Wide Web from a collection of websites to a full-fledged computing platform serving web applications to end users. Ultimately Web 2.0 services are expected to replace desktop computing applications for many purposes.

8. Usability - efficiency with which a user can perform required tasks with a product, for example, a website. Usability can be measured objectively via performance errors and productivity, and subjectively via user preferences and interface characteristics. Web design features that affect usability include navigation design and content layout.

9. Site architecture- The structure of a web site. It reflects how information is organized, including categories, subsites, labeling and other relationships.

10. Links - The process of exchanging links with other websites is called Reciprocal Linking. Since both participating websites get an inbound link, it helps in building link popularity.

Why On-Page SEO Is In Demand

To many SEO's, having a search-engine friendly website is a concern from the start.

When we build or develop sites from scratch, it's usually there as a priority. Because of this, on-site SEO isn't usually a big issue to work with.

We can appreciate the commercial benefits of helping search engines find and read our content. And so do many businesses.

Unfortunately, there are a huge number of businesses out there who have the most appallingly developed websites. Javascript, Flash, frames, poor coding issues, and even a mixture of all of these, to contribute to sites with poor visibility in Google & co.

Twice this week I've seen big national companies with websites that have a blank Google cache - they really are in such an appalling state.

And completely redeveloping these sites can often be a challenge that involves problem solving on multiple levels.

I've written up a more extended report explaining what SEO's do for on-site optimisation, but here are some of the commonest problem areas:

1. URL rewriting

Re-writing URLs to be more search friendly and redirecting old URLs isn't always fun for larger sites, especially those built with static pages.

2. Recoding for visibility

Javascripted menus are one of the commonest scripting problems, and often requires rewriting in CSS and then integrating into the current templates.

3. Flash

Adding noscript tags isn't a real solution, as you really need to create a new site architecture, to provide unique pages with unique content developed around different site keyword areas.

4. Frames

There's really no excuse for developers to use frames, but I'm still seeing these come out - even frames within frames sites. A complete site recode is often required.

5. Conversions

SEO's are increasing concerned not simply about rankings, but also increasing clickthroughs and conversions. Ad copy in meta-descriptions and ensuring a clear Call To Action (CTA) are requisites here.

6. ROI

Some keywords convert better than others - you won't know which unless you run tracking to find your strengths and weaknesses, and approach both as required to develop a more efficient search presence.

7. Content development

Knowing how to leverage content is one issue - another is knowing how to write ad copy is another, and usually a required part of any site development.

8. Link development

Link development may usually take place off-site - but ideally you want to ensure it works closely with your content, not just for major keywords, but also exploiting the longtail.

I cut my teeth in SEO through link development strategies, and used to regard the on-site SEO of far less importance. Namely because I was developing my own sites, and they were search engine friendly from the start.

However, as more people have come to me with often challenging on-site redevelopment needs, I've really come to appreciate the wide skillset required to perform on-site SEO, and why businesses have neither the time and resources to develop these themselves.

On-page SEO can be very challenging, and require dedication of a lot of time and resources, simply to apply basic search engine friendly concepts.

And while so many businesses suffer from poor website development problems, it's going to continue to be a service very much in demand.

Global Warming: Adapt or Prevent?

NCPA Study Shows Living With globalwarming awareness2007 Is Less Costly, More Beneficial

Trying to stop global warming imposes huge costs and provides very few benefits, according to a study authored by a Bush Administration analyst and released today by the National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA).

“Living with global warming costs a fraction of what it would take to stop it,” said Indur Goklany, author of the NCPA study. “The costs of trying to prevent global warming far exceed any benefits of doing so for the foreseeable future.”

The NCPA study compared the costs and benefits of adapting to global climate change with strategies that prevent global warming, such as the Kyoto Protocol, and found that problems most often projected to dramatically worsen as a result of global warming are more effectively and economically lowered by adapting to climate change rather than trying to prevent it. For example:

* Meeting Kyoto emission targets would reduce fatalities from malaria by one-half of one percent, but investing an additional $1.5 billion annually for treatment would cut the death toll in half.
* Meeting Kyoto targets would reduce the population at risk for hunger by only 2 percent by 2085, but investing an additional $5 billion to solve agricultural problems in developing countries would reduce hunger by 50 percent beginning today.
* The population at risk for coastal flooding would decline by meeting Kyoto emission standards, but at a cost of $165 billion a year. By contrast, investing an additional $1 billion annually in preventive measures would address the problem just as well, if not more effectively.

Moreover, adapting to climate change would enhance both economic development and human capital and increase the capacity for technological innovation in developing countries.

“By confronting problems head on we can save lives now, especially in developing countries,” Goklany added. “Preventive strategies, like the Kyoto Protocol, will by default condemn thousands to poverty, disease and death.”

Search Engine Optimization - It's All in the Writing

I now propose to go right out on a limb and say that design has very little to do with search engine optimization. This is a sweeping generalization, I admit, and one to which my designer friends will take ínstant umbrage. But it is true to all intents and purposes. Design can certainly assist in achieving good optimization. By that I mean it will assist if it doesn't hinder the process with acres of code that the robots need to wade through in order to find the potatoes and gravy. Or if the navigation throughout the site is logical and easy to achieve. Or if the pages are designed to load quickly.

Other than that, optimization is all in the writing.

Now, I am a copywriter with around 40 years' experience in the advertising business; and there can be few people in the world who know less about design than I do. But my entire working life seems to have been spent arguing with designers about the length of copy in relation to the size of the pic in any given piece of work. And I confess that I mostly lost, thereafter seeing my words relegated to four lines of 8-point Myopic beneath an illustration the size of a house.

In website terms, however, the tables have been nicely turned. Here's why.

To optimize a website, you first need to take a good, long look at the HTML meta tags of Title, Description and Keywords. Do you see what I see? Yes, they are words. And all of these words require researching and embellishing. Likewise, take a peek under that all-singing, all-dancing Home page banner – and what do you see? More words. These words, unlike those used in the meta tags above, are written for both search engine and potential human customer alike.

Search engines love words. Great, isn't it?

Given all of this, it is pretty clear that all you need in order to properly optimize a website is a lexicon of well thought out words – keywords and keyphrases - sprinkled like generous confetti throughout the meta tags and the body copy. Well, almost.

In the first place, those words must be relevant. They must state clearly what it is you are selling and where you are selling it. The general marketing principle is:

(a) product description,
(b) product benefits,
(c) region of operation.

What you don't need are turgid explanations about the size of your company and who the product is designed for. Your potential customers will mostly be bright enough to know whether or not they are in the market for what you are offering. So to say, for instance, that your 'range of gardening gloves is ideal for gardeners' is a touch obvious, not to mention redundant and a waste of valuable space. In all promotional writing, brevity and clarity are the two most important attributes. But I digress.

So how do you go about collating these key words and phrases? First, you could invest in software that generates your meta tags and keywords for you. Fair enough; there are some good programmes around, and I would be the first to applaud any device that makes life a touch easier. On the other hand, you could take the more intellectually satisfying route and do it yourself.

"Oh, no," you cry, reaching for the gin bottle. "I don't do writing!" To which I answer: "You don't have to. Someone has already done it for you." I should tell you, straight away, that I am not an advocate of plagiarism. However, it is not theft to take a good, long look at somebody else's literary ideas and adapt them to your own ends. I will cite John Donne's penchant for re-working William Shakespeare as a good example of this. And what is good enough for Mr Donne, is certainly good enough for me. So, to formulate your keywords and phrases, why not research what your competitors are doing, then adopt and adapt? By competitors, I mean serious competitors, the people who are listed at No. 1 on Google, Yahoo and MSN in your sphere of activity. Delve into their meta-tags, analyze their body copy, figure out what it is that convinces the search engines to place them at No. 1.

If you feel that such a ploy is a little devious, you can console yourself with the thought that the writers of the No.1 material probably pinched it from someone else in the first place. So that's all right then.

And now for the denouement to this piece, which is the most important bit of all.

We have established with some certainty, I think, that a website stands or falls in the listings stakes by the quality of its words. Of course, that quality is determined by the search engines, not your old professor of English. So the judgement is in algorithm terms rather than literary terms. That's fine; we are simply trying to accommodate the engines, not win a Nobel Prize.

Forget Expensive PPC Advertising - There is an Alternative!

Further, in my not so humble opinion, every Home page should carry a stick of keyphrase-rich body copy. And this stick of copy should be placed where it can be seen, read and acted upon by the search engines. As close to the top of the page as possible.

Sadly, so many Home pages don't have this attribute. The page designs leap from whiz-bang banner to product list or string of pics with no intervening tit-bits of information – in the shape of copy - designed to feed the search engine robots. There is little for the robots to get their shiny little teeth into.

Let me prove the point. On several occasions recently, I have been asked to optimize websites on which the Home pages were bereft of any meaningful copy. Within an hour or two, the copy was written and the sites posted to the engines. Within a couple of days, the sites in question were featuring nicely on the first couple of pages of the major engines. Previously, they were barely indexed.

There's nothing magical about any of this. Because, guess what, search engine optimization is all in the writing.

If this has been helpful, maybe you'll let me know.

8 Essential SEO techniques( Seo Tutorials)

1) Title Tag - The title tag is the most powerful on-site SEO technique you have, so use it creatively! What you place in the title tag should only be one thing, the exact keyword you used for the web page that you are trying to optimize. Every single web page should have it's own title tag.

2) ALT Tags - ALT tags were meant to be for text browsers because the images didn't show in text browsers and the ATL tags would tell the visitor what it's about. You should put your main keyword(s) in the ALT tags, but don't over do it because you could get dropped in the results or even worse banned for life!

3) Link Popularity - Link popularity is the most powerful SEO tool out of all them. Most search engines don't even consider web sites if there is not at least one or two links pointing to the web site. Having another site(s) link to your web site is important when it comes to getting your site a good ranking. Your keywords should be in the links you get and keep the keywords short. When you receive requests for a link exchange, check the site out before linking with them, check for spam (Repeat keywords, hidden text, etc.).

4) Keyword Density - This is also vital and should be used with research. You should use the keyword(s) once in the title tag, once in the heading tag, once in bold text, and get the density between 5% to 20% (Don't over do it!). Also use your keyword(s) both low and high on the web page, keyword(s) should be in the first sentence and in the last one.

5) Page Size - Your web page's speed is important to your visitors and the search engines. Why? Because the robots will be able to spider your web page faster and easier. Try your best to keep your web page over 5k and under 15k in size.

6) Rich Theme - Search engines are looking at themes more and more. Build content (Articles, FAQ, tips, etc.) much as possible and keep the web pages around 200 to 500 words. Create content that's related to your market and link them out to other related content on your site. Try to get 200 web pages or more.

7) Web Site Design - This is also important, if you want to get indexed! Text content should out weigh the HTML content. The pages should validate and be usable in all of today's leading edge browsers. Stay away from flash and Java Script, search engines dislike them both a lot.

8) Insite Cross Linking - This will help you get all of your web pages indexed by the search engines. Your web pages should be no more than three clicks away from the home page. Link to topic related quality content across your site. This will also help build you a better theme through out your web site. On every page you should link back to your home page and your main service(s).

Tips to Increase Link Popularity (Seo Tips)

Link Popularity refers to the number of links coming from other web sites to your web site (also called inbound links). The competition between search engines and webmasters has led the search engines to find new ways to measure the importance of a site. Google has been responsible for introducing link popularity as an important aspect in its algorithms. For instance, if Google reads your site and sees many inbound links from related web sites it interprets each link as a "vote" that your site is good and as a result gives you a boost in your ranking.

If you want to improve search engine rankings with link popularity it is important that the bulk of the inbound links that point to your site are coming from other quality sites; in this case quality is better than quantity because the search engines look at the page ranks of the sites that are linking to you - the higher, the better.

Do and Don'ts
