SEO Strategy: Zone or Man to Man?

In a recent conversation with a big brand company conducting their search marketing vendor selection process, I was asked what “our angle” was. What makes TopRank different from other SEO firms?

The question was followed up with the observations that other SEO vendors this company had talked to all seemed to distinguish themselves by focusing on certain aspects of search engine optimization. Some focused on content, some relied on links and others focused on code and the technical side of SEO.

I am a fan of the adage, “Fact tell and stories sell”, so whenever I can, I like to use an analogy or story to explain things. Hence came the “zone or man to man” idea to explain tactical versus holistic search engine optimization.

When SEO companies focus on specific tactics, it’s kind of like playing a man to man defense. That’s great for certain situations, but if you become over reliant or play to close on any one set of tactics, a major change in the search engine algorithms will get you burned.

I’ve heard similar sentiments about over emphasizing specific SEO tactics articulated by prominent search engine personnel such as Matt Cutts and Tim Mayer at SES and Pubcon conferences.

TopRank takes a holistic approach and following the analogy, I guess you could say it’s similar to a zone defense. We adjust a mix of tactics including content and code SEO, links, public relations, PPC and various online media according to the situation. Major changes in search engine algorithms do not affect our client campaigns as much because we are not relying on any one tactic to drive traffic. Think of it as not putting all your eggs in one basket.

At the core of a more holistic SEO strategy are a set of fundamentals that rarely change: A crawlable site with fresh, themed content focused on providing value to the visitor and the never ending acquisition of relevant links from authoritative resources.

I know the “zone or man to man” concept is a bit lacking in the analogy department for explaining tactical versus holistic SEO, but you get the idea. :)

What sorts of analogies have you used to explain search engine optimization? What examples or stories have you used or heard that have been effective?

The Truth About Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization – or SEO – has been around for pretty much as long as search engines have. Over the years, it has gained both proponents and opponents – many for good reason. The prevalence of sneaky, underhanded tactics, increasing spam in the search engine indexes, and publicized cases of websites being banned from the listings have given SEO a bad rap.

"SEO is just about tricking the search engines," some claim.

In an effort to de-bunk this and other wayward SEO beliefs, we have developed a list of 'top 5 myths about SEO'.

#1 – SEO is all about tricking the search engines

In actuality, good, honest SEO is not about tricking, but analyzing search engine algorithms in an effort to develop websites in a way that consciously supports search engines in doing their job – that is providing the most relevant content to their users. "White hat" SEOers understand that what's good for users is also typically good for search engines, and they strive to not 'trick' search engines, but be forthright in giving them exactly what they want.

#2 – SEO is all about the meta-tags

In a previous life, webmasters would stuff the meta-keyword tag with their desired terms, and voila!, a top spot in the rankings. SEO was about the meta-tags and not much else. Whether this approach worked then or not, it most certainly does not today. In addition to the multitude of other 'on page' ranking factors that now seem to matter (such as keyword-rich copy, anchor text, and file names), sites now more than ever have to look 'off site' – most importantly, at the volume and quality of their inbound links.

#3 – You only have to do SEO once

A recipe for SEO failure: optimize your pages once, obtain great rankings, and let simmer forever. On the contrary, successful SEO requires on-going evaluation and tweaking of strategies in order maintain and enhance positioning. With search engine algorithms changing by the hour, searcher behaviour maturing, and the competitive environment constantly shifting, does it stand to reason that your rankings today will remain the same 6 months – or weeks – from now? Without an on-going commitment to SEO, probably not.

#4 – Anyone can do SEO right

You read an e-book on SEO. You attended an SES conference. You're now a seasoned SEO expert, right? Wrong. Although SEO is definitely NOT rocket science, it does take a level of knowledge, and most importantly, experience, to really succeed. The knowledge that comes from testing out various techniques and working with a wide variety of websites over time is invaluable. Knowing how and why to select the right keywords is crucial, and understanding the impact of the site's design and coding on SEO is just as important. The bottom line: Yes, anyone can 'do' SEO, but it's much more difficult to really do it right.

#5 – SEO is purely the webmaster's job

Your webmaster is responsible to make sure that the front and back end of the site performs as it should. They are typically a technical person; a programmer. They are definitely not marketers. They might implement the SEO changes to the site, but actually determining what should be changed should be in the hands of the content authors and marketing/comm people in your organization. Hoisting the full responsibility for SEO on the webmaster's shoulders can produce less than desirable results as these 'techies' struggle to imagine what a customer would type into a search engine, and then attempt to massage these words into your agency-perfected copy. Instead, make optimization a collective initiative – ideally with the guidance of an SEO expert - and give your webmaster a break.

Questions For Your Potential SEO Company

Last month, I went over questions that you should ask your potential search engine optimization company regarding its tactics.

That set of questions is critical, as before moving forward with any of the myriad of search engine optimization companies out there, you should always determine whether or not they will put your site at risk of penalization in the major search engines (leaving your website worse off than when your campaign started).

However, many people researching search engine optimization companies are unaware that potential penalization is even an issue - they are primarily interested in the results that the search engine optimization company can achieve. This installment of the three-part series will focus on questions to determine the competence of any search engine optimization company that you are considering. To find out whether any particular company is worthy of your trust in terms of results, consider asking the following:

"Do you require that I make changes to my website content?"

Any search engine optimization companies that answer "no" to this question are either using shady tactics or are only scratching the surface of true search engine optimization. Certainly, there are some elements that can be changed on a website that are largely transparent to the user, including title tags, meta tags, and alt tags. While making changes to these elements can create a boost in rankings, it will not give you the search engine dominance over your competitors that you desire. Remember, search engines are interested in matching content (what appears on your web pages) with search queries (the phrases that people are typing into search engines).

The problem with a search engine optimization company only manipulating the largely unseen elements is that search engines recognize that these elements are determined by the owner of the website and may not actually reflect the real content that appears on the pages. In order to perform well across the most popular engines, you must make certain that your search engine optimization company accurately addresses popular search queries within your pages. And this almost always requires changes to your content.

"Will you be adding additional pages to my website?"

If a search engine optimization company answers "no" to this question but answers "yes" to the question above, it likely means that it will be employing what I call the "shoehorn" approach to optimization. This means that the firm will try to shoehorn keyphrases into existing pages on your website, rather than expanding your website to include new content.

The trouble with this approach is that your existing pages are unlikely to directly address the search query. When search engine optimization companies shoehorn in keyphrases, they may achieve high rankings for you, but you probably won't have many long-term visitors. For example, assume that your company makes widgets and you have an "about us" page on your site that gives a brief history of your company, as well as contact information and driving directions. If your search engine optimization company optimizes this page for "custom widget pricing," and you subsequently achieve high rankings for the phrase, it does not necessarily mean that you will see much benefit. One can deduce from the query that people are looking for actual pricing information, not information on where your company is located or when it was founded. Another web page that directly addresses their search query is just a click of the back button away.

Adding new, informational pages to your website is a standard approach for the inclusion of quality search engine optimization phrases. Think of it this way - your search engine optimization company should not be thinking, "Where can we shoehorn this phrase in?" Search engine optimization companies should instead always be thinking, "How can we best address this query with a new page?" The difference in results can be dramatic.

"What will you be doing besides working on my site directly?"

If a prospective search engine optimization company tells you that it will only be making changes to your site itself, this means that it will not be spending any time working on your site's link popularity. Link popularity plays a tremendous role in determining rankings in every major search engine. Simply put, sites that have a good number of quality and relevant incoming links are held in a higher regard than sites that do not. This is because a link from another site is considered a "vote" for your site - but all votes are not equal.

Quality search engine optimization companies will spend a great deal of time looking for industry-specific directories and portals where a link to your site can be added. They will also review all of your existing incoming links and make certain that the website owner has configured them in such a way as to give your site the highest chance for high search engine rankings.

"Will you be adding additional pages and targeting additional keyphrases over time?"

This is a very important question. Even search engine optimization companies that have a reputation for providing quality initial results can fall short on this, but it is one of the most important aspects involved in improving your optimization results over time.

When your campaign is kicked off, your search engine optimization company will target an initial list of phrases. Although good search engine optimization companies will rely on readily available software to determine which phrases are being searched on most often, and common sense to determine which of those phrases will bring buyers and not "tire-kickers," it is in all honesty an educated guess.

Forward-looking search engine optimization companies treat the initial keyphrases as the "testing" phase of the campaign. They track these individual phrases and find which ones are working (bringing in the people that actually buy something or take the point of action on your site that leads to a sale). Armed with this knowledge, such search engine optimization companies will regularly expand your campaign to include phrases similar to the ones that are working the best. Without such expansions based on real data, you are merely relying on the best educated guesses from the initial campaign, and not the hard data that comes from true metrics as the campaign progresses.

"Can you give me references and case studies?"

This one seems obvious, but there are search engine optimization companies out there who claim that their clients all wish to remain anonymous, so that it is impossible to provide any specifics. This is usually a smokescreen designed to defer proof of concept. Certainly, there are businesses that hire a search engine optimization company that wish to keep it a secret, but these are generally in the minority. Forward-thinking companies generally enjoy showing off their success stories, so you should insist on seeing some real (not anonymous) case studies and talking with some references.

When dealing with references, find out how long they have been working with the search engine optimization company. If all references are less than a year old, it may mean that the company has been unable to demonstrate value over the long term, which is certainly something to consider. After all, long-term value is what you should be trying to achieve from a search engine optimization company, and search engine optimization is not a one-time endeavor.

Armed with these questions, you should be able to determine whether a certain search engine optimization company is worthy of both your time and your marketing money, or whether you instead will wind up with empty pockets and a useless site. Remember, high rankings don't always mean good leads, and great keyphrases are not helpful unless they are used properly on your site.

In the third and final part of this series, I will discuss the assurances that search engine optimization companies offer - or fail to offer - from guarantees to exclusivity agreements.

Digg Has A Problem With SEO

Some sort of battle between Digg's behind-the-scenes moderators and the SEO community came to a boiling point just before Christmas as Lee Odden's domain became part of Digg's banned list.

"Well, Mr. Dallas, we've heard your smut masquerading as songs, and we've heard how teen prostitution, pregnancy, drug use, cults, runaways, suicide and poor hygiene are sweeping this nation. We thought you might like to share with the committee any particular causes you might see for those latter problems."

"I dunno. Maybe the proliferation of narrow-minded, suffocating zealotry masquerading as parenting in this country."

-- Steve Dallas considers the problems of a young generation and tells Congress how those are being mishandled by people in control, from a long-ago Bloom County comic.

The social media site Digg enables the contribution of links to pages online containing items that may be of interest to Digg's visitors. Digg's users can vote up or down on those submissions, with the ones receiving the most votes making it to Digg's front page.

That can generate a big spike in short term traffic for a website. Naturally, sites that benefit from such traffic due to ad placements also benefit from the "Digg effect." This has led to some webmasters trying to find ways to get that traffic through any means possible.

It isn't known how long Digg has had moderators in place behind the scenes, and for some time they did not even admit to having them. But the potential for abuse probably made them necessary. Their actions have not always led to universal approval.

The SEO community seems to have earned blanket enmity from Digg's moderators. When news of Lee Odden's domain being banned became public, a long-seething problem between the two began to garner more notice.

A request for comment from Digg executives about Lee's situation has remained unanswered; Digg personnel have been very reticent on discussing their moderators or their impact on sites affected by their negative actions.

Lee confirmed his posted suspicions of Digg's actions in an email response to me:

Because someone or several people noticed several stories that concern SEO being submitted from our blog (not by me or my employees though) and certain influential Digg users that hate anything to do with SEO emailed spam complaints, dugg down a few recent stories and that was it.

The result has left Lee's TopRankBlog.com domain banned from Digg. Any attempt to submit a story where his domain in the URL fails with this message: url is on the banned submit list.

Lee isn't alone in Digg's Turkish prison for domains. Several other webmasters have reported problems with overzealous antispam policies implemented by Digg.

I chatted with Rand Fishkin, a frequent speaker at search-related conferences and an avid Digg user, about Lee's situation. He believes Digg editors hate SEO and will take any opportunity to ban a site to do so.

It isn't a one-sided problem, though. Rand noted how some SEOs have tried gaming Digg to get traffic. The response to this has been an overwhelming backlash against anything SEO-related.

"I've seen many dozens of articles on SEO get flagged for spam, and many that reached the front page (i.e. weren't flagged by the community) get pulled down very quickly for being on SEO-like subjects," said Rand. "It's a sad state of affairs that has heated up recently due to SEOs trying to game Digg more and more."

He also feels that Digg's actions against SEO have taken place as the editors and the community judge SEO by a few who have tried spamming Digg and similar sites.

"Judging any community by what a few of its more maligned members' behaviors is what creates prejudice and intolerance," said Rand. "Diggers (particularly the editors) should be smarter than this - after all, they hate being judged by what the 14-yr old Digg members write and do."

Best Vitamin Supplements

In todays society, there are a ton of liquid vitamins to chose from.

Anything from Eniva Vibe, Goji Juice, Xango Juice, or Noni Juice, there is a new one coming out everyday that claims to have all of your bodies nutritional needs on a daily basis.

But when you dig deeper, and examine these liquid multi vitamins a little closer, you will see that some to not contain the complete liquid vitamins and minerals we need from our nutrition supplements.

I have picked some of the top liquid vitamin supplements and compared them to what I think is the most complete supplement available - Eniva Vibe.

When comparing the Antioxidants alone, Eniva Vibe beats out Xango Juice, Goji Juice, and Noni Juice with a huge gap in between them. Vibe is 3.125 ORAC per ounce and the next closest to VIBE of those three is Xango Juice at 530 ORAC per ounce.

So you can see from those alone, that Eniva has a product in VIBE that will help reduce the free radicals in your body and help you get your body to achieve better health.

Because Eniva Vibe has the complete vitamins and minerals that are needed, it makes it one of the best vitamin supplements available. It will give you what Redbull cant, and that is healthy energy drinks. And that is why I have chose Eniva Vibe as my liquid vitamin supplement of choice and home based business because of is superior nutrient content compared to other leaders in vitamins.

Marshall Sylver

Marshall Sylver Will Change Your Life Just Like He Changed Mine!

Over the past 10 years I have attended dozens of personal development seminars and wealth conferences searching for that one thing I could take and run with. I have always known where I wanted to go in my life; the challenge for me was getting there!

I first came across Marshall Sylver at a Real Estate Expo in 2005 and I was absolutely blown away by his mentality and grasp on the human psyche. I felt an overwhelming passion to learn more from this man and immediately enrolled in his Turning Point seminar. I had no idea the impact his teachings would have on my life. I quit my job within 2 days after the seminar and became a full time real estate investor. Now 8 months later I am enjoying a lifestyle I never thought possible and I know without Marshall’s training I would still be in the same place I have been for the last 10 years. I can’t thank Marshall enough for leading me down the path I was destined to take.

Marshall uses hypnosis as the backbone for helping people achieve their dreams and conquer their fears. The process really works and Marshall is known today as the greatest hypnotist of all time, for a good reason too. In fact I would like to further validate his title as the greatest hypnotist of all time for all those people who say hypnosis doesn't work.

The proof is in the pudding!

- Marshall Sylver has hypnotized more people during his lifetime than anyone
else (10 fold)
- Marshall Sylver holds the record for hypnotizing over 8,000 people at the
same time
- Marshall Sylver has sold more hypnosis CDs, books, and
training material than anyone in history
- Marshall Sylver has created more millionaires and successful businesses
using the process of hypnosis than anyone in history
- Marshall Sylver recently made a movie that hypnotizes you when you watch it,
it is the first movie of its kind, (Tranced)

Marshall has educated and entertained television audiences from guest spots on The Late Show with David Letterman, Howard Stern, Rosie O'Donnell, Dr. Joy Browne, Donny & Marie, Sally Jesse Raphael, Montel Williams and The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch. Marshall is also a respected business consultant sought by many Fortune 500 companies. He has led training programs for such companies as IBM, Ford, KFC and Pepsi, teaching management how to motivate employees & sales staff how to close a deal.

There are some negative articles circulating about Marshall because of a few rotten eggs, I want to encourage you to check Marshall Sylver out for yourself because he could easily change your life just like he did mine.

Search Engine Optimization & Search Engines

So you have your site optimized for search engines with quality content, navigable links, and keywords specific to your industry. But it has been several months and you still are not showing up on the first or second page of results in Google, Yahoo, or MSN.

There are several things you need to do to get better results in the organic listings.

You need to submit your site to the 3 biggest search engines Yahoo, Google, and MSN. You will need to go directly to their site submission pages and submit your site manually. Google and MSN both require a code be typed in for submission. Yahoo requires you have an account with them to submit to their directory. All three are free and only take a few minutes to submit per search engine.

If you can get your website link on a Google PR4 or greater site home page, Yahoo will almost immediately start indexing your information. Msn and Google will follow not much later.

Search for free directories that include your business category and submit your information to as many as possible. Make sure you utilize the description section with keywords that are specific to your industry.

Write articles and submit them to the free article directory services. Include a detailed bio of you and what your services are. Use a valid link to your website. The more original your content, the greater your chance for exposure.

Revisit your title, description, and keyword metatags to ensure you are utilizing this information for the best description of your services. Use only keywords in the title; don’t waste valuable character space on your business name unless it is a major keyword. Take advantage of the description tag as it explains what your business offers and will determine who visits your site when it does show up.

If you offer a local service, post your information in Yahoo Local, Yellowpages.com, and Superpages. General listings are free to post; allow a link to your site, and your business phone number.

Keep your website content fresh. Update your page content at least once a month. You don’t have to go over board, just add something new every once in a while.

Create XML sitemaps. There are free sitemap generation tools that will create a sitemap.xml file of indexed pages of your site. You can then upload this file to your server and submit to Google sitemaps for indexing.

Watch your website competition and where they stand in the search engines for current keywords you are using. Look at their title, description, and keyword metatags.

When you pull up the free listings you will see a link below the listing titled cache, click on it. It will show you where the keywords show up on your site, how many show up, and when the search engine lasted visited your site.

Get creative, be unique, and have fun. The search engines will reward you for it. Just remember the search engines only want to post relevant information on the keyword being searched. Make sure the keyword you are trying to be listed for is relevant to the information on the webpage you are trying to have indexed by the search engine spiders.

Until next time…

SEO Tactics Are Working

I was greeted by a pleasant email this morning from Gary Korn who runs Maine.Info (an amazing collection of resources about Maine). He's one of the many webmasters helping me out with the Ted Leonsis SEO Contest. The email simply said:

Yesterday, my page for the contest was showing up in spot #22 so Google's been quite busy overnight. I didn't think they'd be doing anymore updates before the holidays. There might still be more fluctuations before the contest ends on 12/31. Here's a current snapshot of the top 10 on Google for the [ted leonsis] phrase:

BTW, if by chance Mr. Leonsis happens to read this blog entry, I do apologize for "polluting" the search engine results for your name. This is transient. I'll take down links when the contest is over. I figured if SEOs are going to "pollute" the SERPs (search engine results pages), I'd get a positive URL in the mix. It's also worth noting that nobody "owns" the SERPs. Only Google controls them. It's all UGC (user generated content) after all. Clearly, it's worth investing time and money in SEO and PPC efforts to influence those SERPs, however.

BTW, I concentrate more on PPC work than SEO work. If you're serious about SEO, Graywolf's SEO Blog (yep, that's Michael Gray of wolf-howl.com who "owns" #5 in the above SERP) is mandatory reading. Read his top 100 posts if you're new to his blog or want to learn more about SEO. If you want more background on this SEO contest, read my last entry on the subject, PPC Advertising Comedy.

What is Organic SEO? How to Effectively Maximize Your Website’s Visibility

An organic search is a process by which Internet users find websites in the SERPs, (Search Engine Result Pages), as opposed to using pay-per-click advertisement listings, such as Google AdWords, displayed alongside the organic search results.

The field of search engine optimization, (SEO), is focused on maximizing the visibility of a website by making its listings appear more frequently and more prominently in organic search results. Most businesses are more interested in basing their SEO strategies on the successful inclusion of their website listing(s) into organic search results for various popular keywords relating to their business. This process is recognized as organic SEO, (Search Engine Optimization).

How to successfully perform organic SEO is one of the most commonly asked questions by website owners and for the right reasons. Unfortunately, there is no overnight solution to successfully perform organic SEO so that your website is listed on the top of SERPs. The goal should be to increase your website’s visibility in the search engines over time. This process generally takes time, money, patience and consistency. If you can learn how to manage and leverage your efforts, it will be possible to effectively get your website positioned more frequently and more prominently in the major search engines.

The following are a few organic SEO techniques that will increase the visibility of your website in the organic search results. Again, there is no overnight solution but if you are determined and consistently make and effort to apply these organic SEO strategies to your website, you will see dramatic results… I promise!

Add Relevant Meta Tags to each Page of your Website

META Tags are an element of HTML coding on a website that is used by search engines to index a website in the organic search results. META tags are generally included within the ‘header’ code of a website and the most important tags are the title, description and keyword tags. Rules used by different search engines govern how such tags are used, how many characters they should contain, and how they should be formatted. Below our some general ideas on how to setup the META tags for your website to help with your organic search engine optimization, (SEO).

A META tag title is the heading of your page that you will see on the top left portion of the Internet browser. This is a caption that will be used by the search engines and displayed for viewers of your website. A title should be relative to your business and should include some main keywords relating to the content of that page. It is important to keep the title under 80 characters in length. In my opinion, a relevant title tag is one of the most important aspects for successful organic search engine optimization (SEO).

META tag keywords should list important words that you suspect your target audience will search for when looking for your type of business on the Internet. The list of keywords will be used by the search engine crawlers to index your pages in the organic SERPs. A common mistake people make is to list too many keywords or list the same words over and over. If either of these mistakes is made, many search engine crawlers could consider this spamming and potentially decrease your page ranking. Be sure to keep the number of words to 20 and make sure to list keywords only once.

A META tag description is a short explanation of your business. The search engine crawlers will take the description and will list it with your listing in the organic search results. It is important to carefully write 200 character max sentences and phrases, targeting the most important words contained on your web pages. When you are writing the META tag descriptions, try to eliminate as many filler words as you can to make room for your most important keywords.

Setup a Sitemap for your Business and submit it to Google and Yahoo!

The new Sitemap Protocol standard, now followed by Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft, allows a webmaster to inform search engines about URLs on a website that are available for crawling. A Sitemap is an XML file that lists the URLs for a site. It enables webmasters to include additional information about each URL: when it was last updated, how often it changes, and how important it is in relation to other URLs in the site. This allows search engines to crawl the site more intelligently.

Submitting a Sitemap file to Google Sitemaps and Yahoo! Site Explorer will dramatically increase the visibility of your website in the organic search results. There are even tools out there that will automate the Sitemap submission process and have your Sitemap file submitted and processed to Google and Yahoo! three times a week.

Submit important Information, such as Products, to Google Base

Google Base is a place where you can easily submit all types of online and offline content that will dramatically help with your organic SEO. The items you submit to Google Base will be included in the Google Base directory and depending on your items relevance, can be posted in such places like Google, Froogle and Google Maps, which could greatly increase your website’s visibility in the organic search results. The items you submit can include labels and attributes that help describe what you’re uploading so people can easily locate your items. Attributes are words or phrases that help describe the characteristics and qualities of your items. For any given attribute you may enter multiple values separated by commas. Labels are any keywords or phrases – such as recipe, event, or product – that can be used to classify or describe your item.

Google Base is a great resource to help distribute and share information with others that you would not otherwise know how to reach. With Google Base, your information is almost instantly added and viewable by people searching for your items. Froogle has even been integrated with Google Base. Now products that need to be submitted to Froogle, are submitted through Google Base and is no longer a separate program like it was in the past.

You can submit all types of content to Google Base. Examples include the following: Articles, Events and Activities, Hotels, Jobs, People Profiles, Products, Real Estate, Reviews, Recipes, Services, Vehicles, and much more.

Setup a Blog to add more Content to your Website

As most of us know, content is the key to success on the Internet. With good, quality and relevant content, you will certainly to increase the visibility of your website in the organic search results.

Adding a blog to your website will enable you to increase the amount of content on your website that is relevant to your business. With a blog in place, you can post articles about your industry, feature new products, share specific ideas that may benefit your audience and simply demonstrate that you’re a company who is specialized in your business field.

I recommend setting up a blog on a sub-domain of your website. By doing this, when your articles or blog entries are located in the organic search results and a user clicks on the result, your website will appear; hence, directing them to the source of where you need them to be.

The above ideas are some great ways to begin to effectively perform organic SEO to help increase the visibility and frequency of your website in the organic search results. If you are dedicated and consistently perform these techniques, I’m confident you will dramatically increase your organic SEO results.
