How to Drive Traffic Using Images

I don’t know with static websites but I’ve experienced firsthand from my blogs, especially my photoblog, how images can make traffic pouring in. Aside from the fact that images can make sites more aesthetically likeable, there are other ways that you can do to optimize your images for more search engine traffic.

Here are some effective image optimization techniques:

1. Avoid using images that are too large since they can turn off readers when it takes too much time downloading them. If you find an image that you want but it’s too large, resize it.

2. Use title tags in maximizing the potential of your images in making your site have higher search engine placement. Wordpress powered blogs can easily make use of this image title tag optimization through writing a descriptive title for your images when uploading them for use in your blog posts.

3. Using a descriptive filename, something that can help search engine spiders identify what the image is about is also one way of optimizing images for the search engines. Simple image filename tweaks like, seograph.jpg will perform better than photo1.jpg.

4. Use a keyword suggestion tool such as Overture Keyword Selector in writing filenames or title tags for the images that you use. One of my most well-visited image (because of the good search engine placement) from my photoblog has a title tag of “angel wings tattoo”, which I’ve decided to use with the help of this keyword selector tool.

5. Include your contact information or website URL texts to get credit for your images, if you own the photos you are using. Learn from this tip on how to get credits for your pictures by including contact details or website URL texts to your images properly. Many would just “save the picture as” and put them on their own sites without giving credits to the source of the picture. You can either include a clear note that any use of your images requires a permission from you, a link to your site, or include contact details on your images.

Have you tried any of those methods in using images for SEO? What worked for you? Got other ways to optimize images for your site’s search engine visibility?

Sitemaps 9.0 Gets Support from 3 Major Search Engines

I’m starting to fall in love with the keyphrase coveted trifecta not because it’s the major goal of many SEO webmasters but because it’s simply fun to say. If you have been patiently following this SEO blog, (a big thanks to you and some hugs, too.) I’ve already mentioned something about coveted trifecta in a post regarding off-page SEO beating on-page SEO.

However, I will not be discussing further about this SEO goal of reaching the top of the three major search engine’s SERPS.

But this still has something to do with the three major search engines - Google, Yahoo and MSN AND their synergy in supporting the use of sitemaps.

According to a press release from Google, Google, Yahoo and MSN will be joining forces in supporting Sitemaps 9.0.

“Sitemaps 9.0 is a free and easy way for webmasters to notify search engines about their websites and be indexed more comprehensively and efficiently, resulting in better representation in search indices.”

This is the first joint effort to improve the crawling process of the 3 major search engines. But, a webmaster should be reminded that using Sitemaps 9.0 protocol is not the best way to get into the top of the search results. It is only one
method of facilitating the way of informing the search engines when a site gets updated.

Crawl, er, read the full press release about the unity of the 3 major SEs in using sitemaps.

Don’t Forget About On-page SEO Factors

In doing on-page search engine optimization services, there are essential things that you should never forget. Here are some of them:

Metas
Title meta tags are shown as the headline in search engine results pages (SERPs). It can also be founding the top blue band of Internet Explorer when you visit a website.

Description meta tags are paragraphs that searchers see on search engine results. Moreover, they have to be striking to attract visitors.

Meta keywords tags fluctuate. However, even if these metas fluctuate avoid stuffing them. Only relevant keywords must be used; never overdo it.

Other Tags
ALT tag is the tiny yellow box that appears when your mouse cursor is placed over an image. Hence, if an image is relevant to your site, they should have alt tags. However, some search engines are no longer considering alt tags in ranking nonetheless; using them will not harm you.

Header tags boost search engine rankings. Use them before your descriptive body to take advantage of SEO potentials.

Link Text
Link texts are the text that searchers see when looking at the link. However, link texts that carry names of products do not have much weight.

Site Map
Site maps make searching easy for the users. Moreover, they also make crawling easy for the web spiders.

Content
Content is still the king hence; always prioritize fresh and relevant content.

Will You Buy the Link Bait Service?

For the uninitiated, linkbaiting is that SEO strategy that makes use of various, often sneaky methods to gain IBLs or inbound links and consequentially, gain more traffic. It is a form of viral marketing, Internet-literati style.

For a link bait to be successful, a hook is required. A hook is that thing that drives publicity, good or bad, it still is publicity. Black hat or white hat, it still is SEO.

Examples of linkbaits include delivery of the freshest news, nowhere-else-to-be-found how-to’s, lists (top 10 people with the most polluted mind, why Google will never outdo MSN, top 10 Firefox plugins you’ll never use), controversial or humorous videos, etc. You get the idea?

For the initiated, it’s not new that more and more are making linkbaiting a full-time job. Here are some of ‘em gifted ones:

- Stuntdubl Linkbait Service($5,000)
- Text-Link-Ads Link Service ($5,000 - $10,000)
- SEOMoz LinkBait Development ($5,000 - $50,000)
- Andy Hagans Link Baiting Service ($4,995)
and the most recent player of the link bait game:
- Eric Ward Link Bait Strategy ($2,000)

$2,000 to $50,000?! Lucrative, eh? But how do you measure the success of a link bait service, really? Anyone has ever availed of such SEO service? Feel free to throw in your 2 cents.

SEO Efforts Still Pay Highest For Me

I’ve tried it all since 2004 to make money online. I’ve sold my own products, blogged, did affiliate work, and built a hefty Adsense revenue stream. I’ve tried almost every form of internet marketing I could think of to generate traffic. And I end up coming back to organic search traffic as simply being number one time and time again.

People using search engines are actually LOOKING for something

I know it seems obvious, but what a tremendous opportunity it is for you to show a product to a person who is actively searching for it. People love FINDING websites when they search, and they naturally think of the website that ranks high as being of high quality. This helps close sales. The organic traffic tends to be very productive for almost all efforts.

So when I look at what needs to be done to gain traffic and increase revenue, I almost always come back to some sort of SEO efforts.

It’s fair to say my definition of SEO has expanded, but I still think the important tasks related to SEO have the biggest financial impact on what I’m doing. I wouldn’t turn down any of the social networking traffic I’m getting, but I still think ranking high atop the search engines for coveted phrases is tops when it comes to revenue acquisition.

What efforts are paying off for you?

Important SEO Tips

During the Interactive Site Review session at the 2007 Las Vegas PubCon, various site owners submitted their site for the panel to pick apart. The panel consisted of heavy hitters like Matt Cutts from Google, Tim Mayer from Yahoo, Greg Boser from WebGuerrilla, and Danny Sullivan.

While some of the sites they reviewed may have been lacking in certain departments, the knowledge the panel bestowed is quite valuable for SEOers of all types. What follows is are some quotes and paraphrases that go a long way to demonstrating what it is search engines are looking for:

- each page of your site is an entry point, optimize (title tags, keyphrases) for what each page targets - Greg

- strive for quality links over quantity links - the entire panel

Your web advertisement here - Your web advertisement here - Your web advertisement here - Your web advertisement here - Your web advertisement here - Your web advertisement here - Your web advertisement here - Your web advertisement here - Your web advertisement here - Your web advertisement here - Your web advertisement here -

- if you are targeting your site geographically, get links from local entities (Chamber of Commerce, local directories)

- NO LINK EXCHANGES (don’t even bother - Matt cutts)

- unique content is important (this and link bait are the prevailing themes of the Las Vegas PubCon)

- if you can get into the top 3 of Google Local, you will be on the front page of Google’s standard search if the query is geographically based… - Danny Sullivan

- when optimizing for Google Local, navigate to the Google Local Business Center - this was suggested by Matt as a source to assist with being indexed by Google Local’s index as well as a place to claim your business, similar to Technorati’s blog claim function.

- one of the sites reviewed was a real estate site… during this portion, Greg revealed some interesting information about how this industry markets to the search industry:

the real estate industry conducts SEO much like they did in 98, it’s a bad field in reference to SEO…

and while this may not be a tip per se, it’s good information to be aware of especially if you are considering this industry…

- ditch javascript menus altogether… they are a red flag to ranking algos - Boser

- template-based sites may not rank well because they appear alike to the crawlers… - Tim Mayer and Matt Cutts both iterated this thought.

- Session IDs urls need to be blocked from crawlers because of duplicate content issues (don’t serve session ids to bots)… this was emphasized by Matt who said:

“session ids can be poison for crawlers”

- if your site sells manufactured products, don’t use manufacturer copy… use your own descriptions - this was also stated by Heather Lloyd-Martin during the effective web copy session

- there’s no good use for 302 redirects, ever - the entire panel

- blog about your product or target area, this provide so much of the original content the search engines are looking for - paraphrased from Matt Cutts

This last point plays into the whole link bait theory that was incredibly prominent during this conference (I cannot count the number of times I heard this phrase…). Keep these tips and ideas in mind when you are conducting any SEO or SEM-related process. They will serve you well.

New Ways for SEO

The search engine world never rests. As online marketing professionals discover new ways to obtain top rankings the algorithms evolve right along side. There are two primary reasons behind the updating of ranking algorithms. To increase the quality and relevancy of the results, and to decrease the many page of online spam.
As the algorithms are updated, new ways to affect the results are discovered, and the algorithm must then be again adjusted. This is a cycle that has been around since the early days of search, and one that won't be going away any time soon. A lot has changed over the years, and the future is sure to also deliver its plethora of surprises, but there are three main factors that will always have some level of impact on your search results.

SEO, Content and Links
Some people say that the world of search engine optimization is over and that the entire basis behind successful rankings lies in the power of incoming links. While incoming links do play a significant role, and in most cases are a necessity, they are far from the only determining factor.

There are many determining factors behind what will affect the ranking of a site. The three largest contributing factors are SEO, links, and site content. To compete in highly competitive industries a site needs numerous on topic pages of content, relevant incoming links from a variety of sources, and, solid site optimization. While search is always changing, these three factors will remain constant. Each may change in the level of impact they have, but they will always contribute to the top listings.

Site Content and SEO go hand in hand. Content is very important, but without the SEO to add focus, it can go unnoticed. Proper keyword densities, link paths and keyword placement will always play a role in having the content discovered and ranked by the search engines. If the fundamental SEO aspects are not in place, there is a strong chance that the content may never see the light of day. Incoming links add focus and relevance for the site overall, but if the content is not relevant to the desired phrases the odds of obtaining a top ranking are very bleak.

Links play, and will continue to play a strong role in the future of search rankings as they add that important vote of confidence. When site A links to site B, that tells the search engine site B is worth considering. Value is passed based on relevance and the overall authority of site A.

As more and more webmasters develop new linking schemes, the algorithms responsible for displaying top sites have to continually evolve to weed out the ever increasing amounts of SPAM. While Google's current algorithm relies heavily on incoming links, especially for sites in highly competitive markets, this algorithm will have to change and mutate over time as the internet continues to evolve. If rankings were determined 100% by inbound links where would this leave us? Thousands if not millions of valuable websites would go completely unnoticed. We would also see many sites ranking that are not relevant to the actual search term due to issues related to Google bombing.

Political opinions aside, the single world "failure" does not accurately represent the George Bush bio page; however, it continues to rank #1 in Google. This was made possible by the anchor text used in links posted by thousands of bloggers and webmasters. If links were solely responsible for rankings, we would see a lot more examples of Google Bombing as the actual number of links required to 'bomb' would decline.

Where is Search Going?
For us to know the exact future of search we will have to wait and see what happens but some things are certain to grow in popularity.

The future will undoubtedly see more advances in localized search, serving results relevant to the locality of the searcher. Is this the best way? Only time will tell, but even if this is the future, we will still see SEO, links & content dictating the results. The SEO and content will have to be in part geared towards local information such as zip codes, city names, etc, but will be an important contributor.

Links will undoubtedly contribute to rankings long into the future, but quite possibly will have a reduced role with more SEO fundamentals making a comeback. One example is to take a look at MSN Live Search. As reported by Ross Dunn in the SEO BLOG just this past weekend an algorithm update has shown increased value on fundamentals such as title tags and domain names. These two areas were once an incredibly powerful tool in obtaining rankings, and had reduced in value. Now, at least in MSN, they are gaining ground once again.

Still in its infant stages, Mobile Search is growing as more and more people turn to their cell phones and other mobile devices for search. Mobile search will likely have the most benefit for localized type searching. People looking for an address, weather report, local business, entertainment information, etc. As time goes on the number of users using Mobile Search will continue to grow, and optimized sites will be the ones found by these searchers. A whole new level of optimizing mobile websites will likely emerge.

In 10 years time search will certainly look very different. While it has become a staple in the lives of millions, in the big scheme of things the internet is still very young and search even younger.

Why SEO will always be importantSEO will always play an important role in having sites found in the search engines. Regardless of how search algorithms evolve they will always require a level of on site content in order to correctly rank websites. As long as this content is considered, proper keyword placement and frequencies will play a role.

SEO in itself will continue to change. The proper frequencies of keyword placement, linking techniques and URL structure may alter, but will always have an impact.
As we move into the future and as the search engine algorithms continue to evolve SEO will always play an important role in having your websites obtain top rankings. While the small things will always change it is important to have the basic fundamentals in place and doing so will help sustain consistent rankings into the future.

Paying for Traffic?

Is paying for traffic something to be embarassed about?

Well, I don't think so. For me, I think it's like advertising on billboards or the TV or the other media like newspapers and magazines. I mean using Google Adwords or Adbrite Network Ads is exactly just like advertising.

Waiting for people to click on links which you have exchanged is fine. I believe in that. Organic growth and all. And I also believe in submission of my urls to search engines and blog directories.

But I find that in general, incoming traffic from links to be pretty low, received traffic from blog directories to be a pittance and search engine ranking is really not an easy achievement especially when there are thousands of sites out there vying for the top location in a search based on a popular keyword.

Using Google Adwords and AdBrite's targeted sites and advertising on these sites have proven economical compared to just open advertising on networks on both Google Adwords and Abrite Network ads. I find that if I advertise on those specific targeted sites that have similar and relevant content with mine - those people visiting their sites will click on my advertisement and visit my site.

Moreover, getting your advertisement on specific sites helps you choose advertisement on high traffic sites and limit your spend. Imagine advertising on a thousand small sites with low visitors and just advertising in one site with fantastically high volume of visitors. It can mean alot of difference.

Just getting visitors may not necessarily be good because they may not like the content and you need to find common interest visitors who'll visit and keep reading your posts.

And most important of all - Keep Coming Back!

6 Ways To Get Banned By Google

According to research compiled by search engine optimization expert Mike Banks Valentine, Google drives 74% of traffic to most websites - talk about domination!
That's why it's amazing to me that people still attempt to try and trick Google by using questionable and dishonest search engine optimization techniques to achieve higher rankings. Want to avoid getting banned by Google? Just follow the following 6 tips:

1. Stay Away From Link Farms: A link farm is any group of web pages that all hyperlink to every other page in the group. Although some link farms can be created by hand, most are created through automated programs and services. A link farm is a form of spamming the index of a search engine (sometimes called spamdexing). Joining a link farm will illegally generate hundreds or even thousands of back links to your website in a very short period of time. Also, When submitting your site to web directories, be careful you don't "red flag" Google by adding too many back links at one time.

2. Stay Away From Cloaking: Here's an excerpt taken from an article written by search engine expert, Alan Perkins titled Why Cloaking Is Always A Bad Idea.
"The term "cloaking" is used to describe a website that returns altered Web pages to search engines crawling the site. In other words, the Web server is programmed to return different content to [a search engine] than it returns to regular users, usually in an attempt to distort search engine rankings.

Search engines have a problem with cloaking because it makes a mockery of their ranking algorithms. These algorithms rank pages partly according to what people will see on the page. When this information is deliberately withheld, the algorithm cannot do its job. Cloaking is the ultimate form of invisible text - nobody sees it, not even by viewing the HTML source code."

3. Don't Use Doorway Pages: Doorway pages are web pages that are created for for spamming the index of a search engine by inserting results for particular phrases with the purpose of sending you to a different page. They are also known as landing pages, bridge pages, portal pages, jump pages, gateway pages, entry pages and by other names. Doorway pages that redirect visitors without their knowledge use some form of cloaking.

Doorway pages are designed to increase a web sites ranking in a search engine. The doorway page is usually a replication of the key words and description of web sites. It relies on repetition of related words and phrases to increase search engine ranking.

4. Avoid Excessive Cross-Linking: Cross-linking refers to the linking between related websites – either by owner, as business affiliates, or within the same niche community. Cross-linking may be used for a variety of reasons. For example, to communicate to both search engines and site visitors that a website has important content - to build link popularity which promotes higher page ranks and overall website rankings, and to provide an alternative to calls-to-action in the event site visitors are not yet ready to make a purchase.

When used in excess, however, cross-linking is considered spam and could cause your website to be penalized. That's why it's important to read up on and study how and when to use cross-linking to a website’s advantage, to make sure that the quantity and quality of cross-links are accurate.

5. Don't Submit Multiple URL's From The Same Site: For example, don't submit mywebsite.com and mywebsite.com/index.html to the Google database, essentially trying to get two search results for the same page. While this will give you two or more spots in the search engine's listings, they will be listed together, and the only thing you will have accomplished is knocking other sites down in the rankings, which is unethical.

6. Don't Use automated Querying: According to Google's terms of service, "You may not send automated queries of any sort to Google's system without express permission in advance from Google. Note that "sending automated queries" includes, among other things:

Using any software which sends queries to Google to determine how a website or webpage "ranks" on Google for various queries; "meta-searching" Google; and performing "offline" searches on Google.

In closing, stay away from tricks and dishonest SEO techniques. Instead, focus your energy on building a quality, relevant content site for your visitors. You'll be much better off in the long run!

MSN SEO Techniques

Why Bother With SEO For MSN?

One of the most common preconceptions with SEO is that if you optimize a site for the benefit of Google then you will rank well with other search engines. However, the big three search engines (Google, Yahoo, and MSN) all use different algorithms that demand different things. Google has a mixed bag but certainly leans towards inbound links whereas Yahoo loves keyword dense content sites. This leaves us with MSN, whose primary consideration when determining their search results seems to be heavily based on internal linking structure and inbound links. But these are far from the only SEO techniques you need to consider.

MSN The Meta Search Engine

MSN Search is a meta search engine. Whereas Google openly ignores your meta tags in the majority of cases MSN blatantly uses them to index your pages and discover your keywords. At the very least you need to include the "keywords", "description", and "title" meta tags. Your main keywords should be included in all of these with your primary keyword appearing first in the "keywords" meta tag. All tags must include the keywords you consider the most important to your site.

Also, because MSN uses the meta tags, you should be careful not to spam them with numerous instances of your keyword or the use of incorrect or inaccurate keywords. At present, meta spamming doesn't seem to be an issue with the MSNbot but it is only a matter of time and when the change occurs you won't receive any warning before your site is penalized.

Page Layout And Code

The coding of a page is always an issue with search engines and, therefore, should be important to you as well. If a crawler can't crawl your site then you are unlikely to be indexed and you certainly won't receive the high ranking you want. Keep the amount of HTML or any other programming language on your page down to an absolute minimum and ensure that page sizes are below 150KB at the very most.

Another slightly contentious issue is the use of tables. Again, this leads us back to a crawling problem. MSN does not condemn the use of tables on the whole. However, the MSNbot does not like to see tables within tables within tables. This can be a problem if you don't use CSS and rely on tables to keep your page neat. Including another table in the layout of your page begins to make things look messy from the point of view of the MSNbot.

Keyword Density

Keyword density is an area of SEO that always causes arguments. No search engine openly publishes their requirements in this area but it is widely accepted that while Google has stringent rules in place that require minimal use of keywords both Yahoo and MSN have a much greater tolerance for higher levels. Google prefers only a 2% to 3% density while MSN and Yahoo allow 5% to 6%, possibly even a little higher.

Of course this raises the problem that optimizing for MSN may have you flagged as spam with Google. Fortunately, MSN and Yahoo, both take keyword stemming and keyword variants into account when doing their calculations. Use keyword plurals and stems, and try to ensure that you don't go above the Google ideal of 2% for each of these variants. Also, it is absolutely imperative that your SEO writing does not prevent you from writing copy that is appealing to human visitors.

Website Infrastructure And SEO

Your website infrastructure is important to MSN. Many sites, my own included, have shown excellent results in MSN based on the internal text links and associated anchor text. Try to use the primary keyword for a page as its title and ensure that you use this keyword in all of your navigation bars on your site. This will have a very positive influence on the MSNbot.

Also, as with all search engines, MSN wants to be able to reach every page of your site quickly and easily. Text links are best for navigation and all pages should be reached within three clicks from your home page. If you use graphical navigation bars then you should consider either changing them to text links or including a sitemap that is one click away from your homepage.

Inbound Link Importance

Inbound links count as votes for your website. The more votes you get from sites the better, but moreover the more influential the sites that provide a link to you the greater your search engine results. In all honesty, MSN currently appear to favor the quantity of links over the quality but search engine algorithms are renowned for evolving so try to plan ahead and get relevant links from popular pages. The most important aspect of any individual inbound link is the anchor text. You must get webmasters to use your primary keyword for the page that the link points to as the anchor text.

MSN SEO Conclusion

MSN Search is gaining a little ground on its major competitor, Google. Microsoft is unlikely to sit back and be happy with only taking a small share of the market so optimizing for MSN in order to ensure that you get beneficial results from their search engine is a very good idea. It is possible to optimize pages and content for all of the major search engines if done properly and carefully.

What is the Secret to Effective SEO?

What is the secret to SEO? Well, I’m going to tell you right now. All you have to do is have great content that incorporates the keywords search users will be using to find what you have to offer, design your site in a way that can be easily crawled by search engine spiders, and get relevant, inbound links pointing to the pages on your site. That’s it. Pretty simple, eh.

If it is so easy then why is there a whole industry built around it? It’s because knowing SEO and actually doing it are two different things. SEO is actually a bit more complicated than I made it out to be in the opening paragraph, you do need to know some of the details of what search engines look for, but it really isn’t that hard to learn. You could just read Aaron Wall’s SEO books and read up on some good SEO blogs such as such as SEOmoz and be an expert in no time. However, as I have already stated SEO is more than just know how.

A big part of SEO is getting relevant inbound links to the pages on your site. This can be accomplished in many ways. Andy Hagans and Aaron Wall have put together a pretty comprehensive list of link building ideas here. However, to be a really effective SEO you are going to have to be little creative and have some marketing and business skills. You need to be able to come up link building ideas and implement them in a cost effective manner. It is pretty easy to get a lot of traffic from the search engines with some know how and a little effort, however, It is the SEO that can leverage their resources in creative ways to get the most out of their money and efforts that are most successful. Effective SEO really just comes down to effective marketing, creating buzz about you site and getting people to link to you naturally. If you want to be an effective SEO learn as much as you can about marketing, then supplement that knowledge with some basic information on how the search engines work.

Google Dreams – If I Were the President and CEO of Google

To those who turn on their computers once a day to collect a few e-mails, Google is only a name that shows up a lot around the web. For the cyber crowd Google is a burgeoning, complex, impersonal entity that spells success or doom in a heartbeat. It is Caesar at the Coliseum with thumbs up or down.

Google is neither bad nor good it is only a vehicle and for the most part it does what it is supposed to do very well. To the average Joe it is a darned good search engine. To webmasters, online business enterprises and the like it is a morphing complex and ever changing behemoth whose every move must be carefully tracked studied and considered before making any decision to do with online commerce or any major form of web communications.

SEO (search engine optimization) has become the single most important body of knowledge in the cyber world, maybe even the whole world! This is the science of website promotion. The most basic elements are search engine rankings, keywords and advertising. Yahoo, MSN, and other search engines require pretty much the same things as Google in order to be successful but Google is the undisputed champ at the moment.

Google cannot be faulted for running its business like a business but as with so many other giants of industry the human element starts to disappear in almost equal and direct proportion to its own grandiosity.

More then ever warnings are trumpeted about the fatal errors involved in not following the Google guidelines for optimization. The wrong keywords, the wrong number of links, the wrong kind of tags and other elements of website promotion can spell sudden death to any site.

As a writer I have run up against a few of Google’s potential shoot me downs. To my chagrin it is a software program that decides my fate and not a real person.

I publish articles all over the internet and by checking sites and data bases that host my articles I can ascertain that about two or three hundred thousand people have read my work and it is increasing daily. I gleefully submitted articles to any decent article base I could find. I always kept in mind that it was the message I was writing that was important to get to as many people as possible. After all it is those people that are most important of all, I reasoned.

Now if my articles show up in too many places I can get the search engine axe. I can’t deny that getting the articles out was always my primary goal. I have no product to sell and I’m not hoping for fame but I still have to watch my step. I can readily understand that there are thousands of outfits that are driven by greed or malice and would ride the back of the search engines to any place they could. But I doubt that a robot or software program knows the difference between me and them.

I have often pondered what I would do about all this if I were the CEO of Google. The answer always seemed obvious. I wouldn’t change the entire direction of Google but I would add something to insure that it could not lose its human element. I would create a department not as a mere appendage but as full blown arm of the company.

My department would be constantly searching for websites that show remarkable qualities. Sites with exceptionality would be chosen and become part of a feature known as “Google’s Choice.” Great web design would be on the list but not limited to that. Real humans would search for not so great designs but with obvious fledgling intuitiveness and our department would offer and provide help to those sites to bring them up to the highest levels.

The department would seek out sites with important content. Sites that contribute to the entire web experience, to their particular area of concern or perhaps to the nation or the entire world at large.

No one would need to apply but rather we would apply ourselves to searching out and approaching these sites. We would develop them, contribute to them and promote them. Their success would be our reward and no more as long as their success was beneficial in some way to the entire web community.

Some mistakes would be made and it would require a willingness to experiment a bit but the rewards would be so great. The bad rap the internet gets now with all the porn and trash might at least be offset by such a truly humanitarian endeavor.

One of the most wildly successful books of the decade has been Rick Warren’s, The Purpose Driven Life. It has been said that this book is not the most important book of the decade but behind it was promotional machinery that could have been equally as successful with a book about raising hogs. Just for the shear heck of it our new department would try to simulate this kind of success. Maybe we could take Martha’s little home and family pics site and turn it into the most marvelous internet gallery online. Why climb that mountain, to borrow a phrase, "because it is there."

The present internet legacy is a draw between a good international business platform and a river of scams, schemes and scum. The bottom line is that it would help an internet giant to make the internet itself a giant contributor to the world at large. If I were the CEO of Google the new “Google’s Choice” would be the first order of business for me.

Making Sense of Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the strategy of using techniques to try to improve the rank a website has among search engine listings. Longtime marketers know that techniques of SEO must adapt to structures of the popular search engines. Although most SEO strategy can be done online, some is done offline, like adding URLs to direct mail pieces to drive traffic to sites. Mailing postcards to prospects to advertise an online opportunity, via website URL, can be a very effective marketing effort, as it combines traditional marketing by mail to more advanced internet marketing. Likewise, distributing flyers can be very effective, particularly in urban areas. These are offline methods of traffic-generating which can create traffic, which is one element the search engines are eyeing.

The search engines keep track of a lot of other elements related to your website which tell them, “This is a site of interest and significance”, resulting in a higher ranking for the site in the search results they return to online information seekers.

SEO methods can certainly cover a wide range of website components; including but not limited to domain name, title / heading / HTML tags, file names and directories, frequency of quality terms used, keyword info, image ALT tags, text without frames, photo captions, targeted quality content, regular updating of content, back-links, and overall website popularity.

And SEO strategies that involve manipulation of these various SEO components can be broken down into two main categories; "white hat" or “black hat.” White hat SEO methods are generally those that are approved by search engines, like adding good content and other quality to your site. Black hat SEO methods are referred to as tricks, like using cloaking devices. Some people say all SEO is manipulative. Others say only black hat is.

Some companies offer SEO services. For practically any budget range, you can buy:

- PPC (pay-per-click) campaigns where you try to draw online traffic to your site by bidding on words relating to your niche that you think people will use in search engines to find you.
- Site Submission – There are plenty of companies out there that will allow you to enter your URL into their form and then they will submit it to a group of top search engines for you at no charge, like Submit Express at: http://www.submitexpress.com/list.html . You can also pay them to submit it to many more. Submitting in this manner is generally recommended once a month. You can also purchase products like: WebPosition Gold, a search engine software all-in-one package that optimizes your web pages, submits them to top search engines, then tracks the page rankings and web site visits and visitors.
- Article Marketing – Online marketers write articles that focus on keywords or key content that would attract search engines to them when people search for their key content.
- Links – Not only through article links but other links as well (whether link exchanges or purchased in-bound links), webmasters try to increase their search engine rank by establishing quality linking with top sites or high-traffic sites out there.
- Posting to Opportunity Seeker Message Boards – This is just another method of creating back-links to the website. An e-mail signature with a compelling line of advertising can redirect readers, who have already shown to have an interest in the opportunity market, back to selling website—more back-links.
- Online Directories and Classified Ad Sites – These are more fine sources of potential back-links to the website. Search engine spiders regularly determine popularity of sites via back-links, and rate them higher accordingly, which creates even more traffic flow.
- Link Exchange – This is a slower way to create back-links, but it can be effective if done regularly. Usually, this type of arrangement must be set up webmaster-to-webmaster per mutual agreement, but there are automated tools such as Link Machine which greatly speed up this process.

So add some SEO into your Internet marketing. SEO, when done successfully, can bring waves of traffic that you never expected, and that translates into sales success. Even at little or no cost, there are plenty of things you can do to keep the search engines happy, helping to bring internet visitors to your websites!

What Web Design Clients Need to Know

Team Work This article is based on my experiences working with web design clients. It may be subjective in nature and not reflect your experiences. Nevertheless, I wanted to share. I have found that sometimes web design clients don’t realize or understand that building a successful web site doesn’t fall solely on the shoulders of the developer. Rather I find — and they must realize — that the best possible results will come by way of a partnership of sorts. It’s a team effort. The client needs the developer’s help, but the developer needs the client’s help, too.

Never expect clients to know and understand markup, the dynamics of design, CSS, accessibility, usability, or SEO, but do encourage them to learn the basics. There are things they must know in order to be a better team player. If they understand the developer’s mission and methodology, they can be quite instrumental in making the project a success. In fact, they must shoulder some of the responsibility for their site’s build and its success after it launches. The developer must also have a willingness to teach them and in turn the client must have a willingness to learn. If not, this can be frustrating. They may say: “just do it, we ain’t got time.” If, however, their site is going to be a huge success, the developer is going to need their help and cooperation.

With their help and a genuine concern for their own site, more time can spent focusing on the site’s technical issues, scripting, accessibility, usability, graphics, and the design itself. It is, after all, their site so their concern for its success should be high. I have found, though, this isn’t always the case. If they don’t care or have an interest, well, it makes the developer’s job that much more challenging.
Content Needs

Content is king, yet it is often treated as an afterthought. That’s a shame. The content is the message; the reputation; the public image. The message should be clear in the client’s mind and properly conveyed to the developer. But not necessarily directed in an absolute manner. As I wrote, making a good site is a team effort. So while the client must have a firm idea of what he or she wants to get across, the web developer has valuable experience in regards to what works and what doesn’t, how much content should be presented, and where it should be on a site. Great content is meaningless if it won’t be properly digested by the site’s visitors.

Assuming the developer isn’t the copy writer, which is usually impossible unless the developer has an intimate knowledge of the client’s business, the method of content delivery (from client to developer) is important. The site’s content must be presented to in an organized manner once pages and sections are determined. Content shouldn’t be given in a random fashion spread across multiple emails without regard to the predetermined organization of the site-to-be. The site’s content is usually best given as text files organized by page and section sent as a single email’s attachments or on disc. I say text files because it is usually best provided as plain text. Spending hours un-formatting fancy Word file garbage is a pain at best. But the client may need to be told this up-front.

Additionally, there’s more to web content than words. Links are an essential part of a web site and the client needs to consider and identify them — the client needs to understand the dynamism of a website so they can provide not only external link targets, but also set up internal linking as well. This can be as simple as being sure to add wording such “Contact Us” where appropriate within certain bodies of text. Same thing applies to headings. Consideration for headings and how they should be worded is important. Since headings can be such and big part of navigation, organization, and indexing, the developer should be consulted.

Other specialized content also needs to be given due attention. The client needs to be informed of this by the developer, and the client needs to provide this content as well. Not all specialized content such as alt text, but long descriptions, contact form options, captions, and such need to be considered and addressed. The client needs to be made aware of these needs as they probably may not realize the importance. But once he or she does know, cooperation and provision is essential.
Imagery Concerns

For most users, the web is a largely visual medium and should be utilized in this way to the fullest. The developer must be sure to let the client know that important content delivered via imagery will need to be backed up with text for accessibility and SEO reasons, but the client needs to deliver quality imagery unless other artistic or photographic arrangements are made ahead of time. Like written content, imagery shouldn’t be an afterthought. Ideally the client will provide a wide selection of images from which the developer can pick and choose. These images are best presented in reasonable sizes on disc or zipped up and sent as an email attachment, and organized if pertinent to specific bodies of content. Images will usually be sized and optimized by the developer so they don’t have to be delivered in finished sizes, but getting huge image files measured in thousand of pixels and megabytes in file-size can be overwhelming. Moreover (and this may just be my preference), providing images embedded in Word files or PDFs can be an unnecessary labor maker.

If no images are available, then provisions should be made so the developer can purchase stock photos and such unless, again, other artistic or photographic arrangements are made ahead of time. Personally I’ve had some clients give me a disc with a ton of high quality photos while others have only provided a single small, fuzzy photo. For creativity reasons the former is greatly preferred and can have a huge impact on the outcome.
Post-Launch Promotion

The web developer can do everything right and work in the best interest of the client if the client is given this information and both parties work as a team towards a common goal. But the site can still fail. The site needs to be promoted. This part really falls on the shoulders of the client. The client needs to tell people about the site, advertise the site, and get others to link to the site. The developer can submit the site to search engines — which isn’t even that necessary — but this hardly guarantees success if the client doesn’t work towards site promotion as well. I have some clients that get most of their visitors from my portfolio because they haven’t done anything to help their own cause. Other clients, with the same basic structure and site organization, have had tremendous success because they put forth the required effort to make it so. Regardless of how optimized the site is in terms of accessibility and SEO, without the client’s help, it’ll never rank high unless its content is extremely unique and highly sought after (a rare combination indeed). The client can request a site that reaches the top-spot on Google, and the developer can do what’s required on his or her end, but working only from one end, it’ll likely never make it to the top.

This particular site-promotion topic, Preparing a Website for SEO Success, will be is discussed in another article in the near feature so stay tuned. In the meantime, though, use this article to help make your next site a success and help your client help you do the best you can for them. Also, please share some of your ideas? What would you like your next client to know that your last client didn’t? What makes your job easier and your client’s sites more successful?

Don’t be an Internet Fool

Somebody out there wants you to be a fool. Somebody out there is hoping you’ll be a fool. In fact somebody out there is counting on it. And if you are, it’s a shame, because it reinforces the belief that fools abound on the web and the non-fools have to suffer for your ignorance or, in some cases, plain old stupidity. Have I piqued your interest? Good, there’s hope for you yet. Please keep reading as herein are fifteen ways to prevent yourself from becoming an Internet fool and thus saving the rest a few headaches. In a place where no fools exist, those who ply the trade of foolery will eventually get tired and move on.

Internet scams, spam, hoaxes, and misdeeds persist. The reason is simple: These things work. Not for the majority of savvy users, perhaps, but when miscreants are happy and successful with results like one-in-a-thousand, that’s enough motivation for them to keep at it. As long as one-in-a-thousand grin and click, the deluge will persist and the masses will suffer, even if the suffering means nothing more than having to view and delete, view and delete, view and delete.

1. The rich heiress dying of cancer and the son of the late Minister of whatever did not find you by way of some special coincidence or recommendation. They do not want you to invest their millions — they have no millions — and you will not get 10% (well you will, but 10% of nothing is nothing). Seriously now, do you even for a minute suspect this is true? They want you to say yes. If you do they will need a few of your dollars to pay off officials as difficulties will no doubt arise as they attempt to get those millions to you. Once you part with your money you will never hear from them again.
2. Maybe your member is weak and fails to rise to the occasion, fellahs. Or maybe when it does, it doesn’t rise high enough to suit your loved one. Well, as much as I’m sorry to hear that, an online pharmacy isn’t the answer. Even if you do manage to get some miracle pills, rest assured they’re crap. And if by some stretch of the imagination they’re not, you’re breaking the law or exposing yourself. Have a problem? Need some pills? Please see your doctor.
3. Whoa, congratz, you’re an eBay Power Seller. Or not. Don’t click on the email link like a fool. And just where does that email link go? To some site that looks like eBay? They can be tricky, but don’t be tricked. If you’re a big time eBay player and you think there could possibly be some truth to this news, fine. Believe it. But please go to the official eBay site and login into your account to get the goods. Don’t click the link in the email. Same thing applies to those “disputes.”
4. Time to update your PayPal account again else it’ll be suspended? You see the privacy policy, you see the logo, but don’t believe what you see. If you think it’s legit, don’t go to some look-alike site with an IP address for a URL and login. No, instead go to the official PayPal website and login to your account the right way. If there’s something that needs updating, it’ll be posted on your account.
5. Looking for that special gift but can’t afford something nice? Well buying a real Rolex for cheap by way of some site you got a link to in your email isn’t the way. You’re gonna get ripped. If it’s not some scam where they are collecting credit card numbers, it will be some site that is offering something other than the real thing. And if you do by some freakish chance get a real Rolex, it will be stolen or defective. If you want a Rolex, go to a reputed distributor and expect to pay top-dollar, or settle for something less.
6. Some loving “family member” or “dear friend” sent you a postcard? How nice. Even if they happen to mention this alleged family member or friend’s name, call or email them first to verify this before following the link. If you don’t you might end up getting a postcard that your anti-virus program is more anxious to read than you are.
7. Sure you’re horny, who isn’t? But are you really going to click on a link that some stranger sends you with the promise of a “hot” photo? If you get an email like this from your significant other and suspect it may be the real deal, call him or her and ask… did you really send me something, baby? And if he or she says yes, you might want to discourage them from doing that again.
8. Five Russian models are hot for you, or at least that’s what it says in the email. But really, look in the mirror. Do you look like the kind of man, or woman, the five Russian girls are dying to meet? If the answer’s yes, go hit the bars for a night and pick up someone locally. If the answer’s no, well it’s okay to dream but keep your finger off your mouse. You’re going to end up with doing something you’re going to regret.
9. Your services may be wanted. It’s true. And any business person will rightfully respond, but when the deal is struck and the deposit sent, don’t be duped into sending a refund before their check clears, no matter how much they plead and whine. If they sent you $1000 instead of the $100 you requested tell them sorry, but that they should have been more careful and that you’ll gladly refund their money after their check clears and not a moment sooner — assuming you even get a check that is.
10. If you want to be number one on Google, don’t believe everyone who says they can get you there. Not to say there aren’t legitimate businesses out there who can help you with SEO, but first ask yourself some questions like why did they use some unrelated email — or your own email — to send you their pitch? Ask why they are spamming you to get their message out there? And are they going to make you number one using the same practices? And if it does seem to be real, search them out first to see if they can get themselves number one on Google. If they’re not number one, what makes you think they can make you a star?
11. If it’s misspelled, it’s crap. As a rule, anybody that has to resort to tactics like spelling Viagra with a “1″ — \/1@gr@ — and other such misspellings isn’t and cannot be legitimate. If they were they’d reach you another way, such as by way of printed literature at your local clinic. Sending gibberish is just that: gibberish. Don’t be tricked. If they have to cheat to get to you it’s not worth your time.
12. If you do some of your banking online that’s fine. Good for you. But don’t update your records or confirm anything (unless you just opened the account a few minutes ago). If you suspect your bank might need something from you, go to the official site and log into your account to see what’s up. Don’t follow the link in the email. And if it’s not your bank, or you don’t bank online, well, what are you thinking about? View and delete and do nothing more.
13. Blank emails should not be responded to. If it’s legit, they’ll just have to figure out that they sent it before completing the body of the email. By responding you are doing one thing and it’s a valuable service to them: You’re validating your address. It’s bait and if you take it you’ll be sent more bait. Responding with “dear sender, you sent me a blank email by mistake” is like saying, “hey, I’m here and checking my email address… please send me more crap.”
14. Reading emails that begin with “Hello Steve” may be fine, but only if your name is Steve. If it’s not Steve, and you don’t know Marty, it just like the blank message above. They’re on a sucker hunt or trying to validate your address. Responding with “Hey Marty, I’m not Steve” is foolish. They will send you more stuff once they know you read your mail.
15. Even if you did enter the International Lottery, chances are you didn’t win. If you did, they will contact you via the means they describe in the contest rules. I’ve seen lots of spam messages since I’ve been on the web (since the mid-90s) and I’ve won lotteries i
