Is a feeder site clever or wasteful?

I have a major site that I am trying to promote in the search engines, it's for home education.

To provide the major site with traffic and links, I created what I think of as a "feeder site", http://www.learninggamesforkids.com/. It is made up of a few of the learning games that make up the "playground" of the main site.

I hoped that as a free site, I could get more schools and other sites to link to it than they would to a page which is part of a domain built around a subscription service. I could put these activities on my main site as an example of the playground activities. I would probably get less people to link to it but it would be directly on my main site.

Here is my question... Is there any SEO advantage to having the links come directly to my main site rather than another site?

Note that the feeder site has only outgoing links to my main site (there is one other outgoing link that is temporary to Parenting-in-an-electronic-age).

Also, some of the games that it loads are hosted elsewhere. Should I mark those links with some sort of "spiders, do not follow" to not "waste" any page rank?

When do inbound links dictate ranking

QUESTION: When do inbound links dictate ranking?

"We have been told by an SEO consultant that, once the number of inbound links becomes significant, this rather than any SEO optimisation of the site itself dictates ranking for search terms. How true? If so, it implies that, to make any changes in rankings and search terms, we need to devote effort to links and link text from appropriate sites (authority etc). It implies time spent on adjusting title tags, keyword density etc, is fruitless." Paul C.

ANSWER

As I see it the issue is that your SEO consultant has told you once a large number of incoming links are obtained their ranking power will usurp the benefit of optimization. In my opinion this is too bold a statement to make so I will try to define it better in two parts:

Part 1: How to Make Inbound Links Fulfill Their Potential

Quality inbound links are indeed an extremely important element of any promotion and when many are obtained I am certain they are a significant cause for rankings. There are even circumstances where 'Google Bombing' (the act of having many sites linking to an unrelated site using nefarious text in order to get that site ranking for that text) has worked. Google Bombing, however, is SPAM and not the type of promotion that a business should be considering because it is against search engine policy and it has the inevitable negative of placing all of one's eggs in one basket.

In reality before an inbound link can be established as credible your page must be credible. For your page to be credible it must clearly identify the topic that is reflected on the inbound page. Here is an example:

Say you currently have 800 links from various relevant sites pointing to a page within your site. Now, consider a search engine algorithm; it will try to determine if these links are relevant to your page and determine if you are to get a boost from these links. This is your moment; you must convince this ruthlessly objective software algorithm that your page is clearly and undeniably relevant to the pages that are pointing to your page. This determination will require that your page is setup to clearly present relevance. In other words, you will need to ensure that your page title, Meta Description, headings and content all clearly reinforce the topic you wish to portray.

Part 2: Optimization is the Resin, Link Popularity is the Catalyst

Are you familiar with two-part epoxies? Essentially they are two chemicals (the Resin and the Catalyst) that when mixed becomes glue. Apart they are nothing but smelly chemicals but together they become powerful. This analogy is very apt for describing the benefits of link building and optimization:

• Link building alone will perhaps get you a competitive ranking but it can take a long time.

• Optimization alone may also get you a ranking but in my experience rankings rarely 'stick' without some popularity thrown in; in fact if your rankings bounce around a lot it is fair to guess that you may not have enough inbound links.

The ultimate solution is to combine the two and make them both work to improve rankings.

In this analogy, however, unlike an epoxy product there is no indication of the formula to use; should it be 50/50, 20/80, 60/20? This is where the process of ongoing optimization comes in. For example, say your 800 links and your optimized page combined to create a ranking in the top 10. Now you obviously want a #1 ranking so what do you do next in order to improve your rankings? Do you wait until you have more inbound links, do you tweak the text used in the inbound links or do you optimize your page to increase relevance? Let's take these one at a time:

1.

Waiting until you get more inbound links is not the answer, especially in today's fast paced marketplace where achieving that top ranking quickly is paramount.
2.

Changing the linking text in your inbound links requires contacting each webmaster and somehow convincing them that it is in their best interest to drop what they are doing and change the text in your inbound link; highly unlikely and very time consuming.
3.

Optimizing your page further by finding ways to increase relevance is quite painless and as soon as you make the changes you may only have to wait a few days to see results.

To me the answer is obvious; while you continue to naturally build inbound links (you should never stop) you should re-optimize your page and try to increase its ranking. This is where everyone who is trying to obtain a ranking is essentially trying to discover their personal ranking formula; the formula for you may be totally different to someone else's.

I suppose the question now is, "Will optimization work in such a scenario?" Yes, in my experience optimization is that extra edge that can move you up a single position or many positions depending on just how competitive your top ranking goal is.

QUESTION Continued…

"We were told this some way down the line in an SEO contract, where the initial proposal was made in standard terms. The argument we were given was that one of his sites had remained at no1 position for some keywords despite major changes to the home page, thanks to the weight of consistent link text from inbound links. We seem to have seen this ourselves a few times on our well-established websites: a major change in home page design, where we placed more emphasis on design than retaining SEO structures, did not affect our good Google rankings. Is this due to good inbound links? Look forward to your views!" – Paul C.

ANSWER

I get the impression from your question that your SEO consultant was not immediately clear just how important link building was to the success of your contract. This is unfortunate and in my opinion it was an oversight on his/her part. I am always very vocal with my clientele about the importance of having an active link building strategy. I also don't leave it at that. I have a whole array of tools that allow me to determine where to attain the best inbound links and I also recommend a link building company to help the ongoing process of building link popularity.

With Luck the Formula May Change For You: Optimization 10% / Inbound Links 90%

You also mention that in your experience there have been occasions where you have been able to alter your design without affecting rankings. It is difficult for me to know for certain without having explored the situation but in my experience this can happen when you have built such a strong credibility (through inbound links and consistent site wide topic) that you are many steps ahead of your fellow ranking competitors. As a result when you made these changes your relevance 'perhaps' dropped (assuming your site optimization didn't actually improve with the new design) but not enough to lower your ranking. So in essence you are in the ideal situation of being a leader in your rankings which means you can take more risks with design and enjoy your reign at the top.

Questions to Ask Your Potential Search Engine Optimization Company- Part Three

The first part of this series was about questions to ask a potential search engine optimization company regarding the tactics that it will use to optimize your site. These questions are crucial because there are search engine optimization companies out there that will use techniques that can put your site at risk of penalization by the major engines. The second part of the series covered questions that could determine the competence of a particular search engine optimization company and help you decide if you will be able to trust them with your business.

Now we come to the final part of this series, in which we will look at business assurances made by search engine optimization companies. If your prospective search engine optimization company has satisfactorily answered all of your questions as outlined in the first two articles, it may indeed be a perfect fit for your business. However, there are still some important areas that need to be covered - primarily related to business assurances and expectations.
Business Assurances

What type of guarantee will you give me?

Many search engine optimization companies will tell you that they can't offer you a guarantee at all because they don't control the engines. Other firms will try to give you a guarantee that is rankings-centric and that is, as demonstrated in my article "Leprechaun Repellant and Guaranteed SEO Companies - The Disturbing Link," rather useless unless the search engine optimization company can prove that all of the keyphrases that will be targeted are both relevant and popular.

On the other hand, a search engine optimization company may offer you a truly meaningful guarantee in the form of one that is traffic-centric and drawn from targeted keyphrases. In such a case, you will approve the keyphrases and the search engine optimization company will guarantee a percentage increase in targeted search traffic. This guarantee is meaningful because the firm cannot pick unpopular phrases and you will approve the phrases to be certain that they are relevant. Not all search engine optimization companies offer this type of guarantee, but it's worth looking for one that does.

Will you work with my competitors?

Few search engine optimization companies will give you a blanket "no." If they do, ask them to delineate. It's rare that a search engine optimization company will block out an entire business segment, and its idea of what comprises a competitor may be much narrower than yours. Some firms will not give you any promises regarding your competition. This response is not satisfactory, as the last thing you want a search engine optimization company doing is learning about your industry from optimizing your site and then soliciting your competition, using the knowledge they have gained to benefit from economies of scale.

Other search engine optimization companies will charge you extra for exclusivity - which can seem a bit like extortion. Remember, the vendor does not have control. YOU are the one paying the bills, and any search engine optimization company that uses this policy is not worthy of your cash. Quality search engine optimization companies will ask you to submit a list of your primary competitors and will not work with any of them for as long as you maintain a relationship with the firm. Period.

How much work is expected of me?

As discussed in the first part of this series, quality search engine optimization almost always requires the creation of new content. But who is responsible for writing this content? If your company is like most, everyone is pretty busy. If you embark on an SEO campaign, will you have to pay extra for an outside copywriting resource? Will you have to give the job to an overburdened internal person?

Search engine optimization companies that are interested in taking as much off of your plate as possible will ask only that you make a resource available for a phone call and will then handle the copy for you (giving you, of course, the opportunity to approve it all). You should also be prepared to provide the firm with any marketing materials, brochures, or whitepapers that explain your product and your messaging. Since writing for search engines is a learned art, it is not practical to expect a new person to come in and get it right the first time. This means that if a copywriting resource is not available from your search engine optimization company, your campaign can take much longer.

Additionally, once your search engine optimization company has made all of its change recommendations, will it drop a huge document in your lap and require you to make those changes? Or will the firm instead make a resource available to do the implementation at no extra cost? Certainly, there are some sites, especially those that draw on dynamic content, where you may not want an external company coming in to make the changes (although you should still limit your search to search engine optimization companies that are capable of handling this). Simpler sites, such as those created using strict HTML, are easy to change.

Your search engine optimization company should be able to implement these changes on a test bed site for your approval before the site goes live. Much like copywriting, implementation of SEO changes is a specialty that regular designers do not often face. It is usually faster to have your firm do this, since it has handled such a task so many times before.

Well, you've asked the questions, narrowed your choices, and now have to select between any of the vendors that answered satisfactorily. Of course, some search engine optimization companies will tell you whatever it is you want to hear to get your business. Your best bet is to take your time and read the fine print--and make sure that anything of particular importance to you is added to the contract. I'm not saying that all salespeople are liars--just the really good ones. But if you're savvy and ask the right questions, that shouldn't be a problem.

Microsoft Search SEO Tips

A post at the WebmasterWorld discussion forum brought up the subject of search optimization tips for Microsoft’s search engine, Live.com. The information is fairly standard across the board, but it is good to see this information made public. The question becomes, does anyone care enough about Live.com to implement these attributes (although, if you’ve optimized for Google and Yahoo, you’ve pretty much accomplished the same for MSN)?

During the thread, RichTC, a poster who was also pointed out by Barry, goes over each initial point with a sharp, critical eye. RichTC’s post certainly helps clear up and confusion those of you may have about MSN Search SEO. Some of his nuggets of wisdom include:

*Discussing the Content is King theory - If content was currently king a) the search bot would read all pages on a site rather than skim them b) authority sites rich in content would be ranking left right and centre yet they are not and c)i wouldnt be able to get junk 5-10 page sites ranking well in msn

*Discussing the fresh content theory - I think this was a dream that the marketing people at msn had and the search team think they are on the money with. Fact is i can get sites with no fresh content outranking sites with fresh content. A site with no new content or additions slowly moves up to the number one position of the serps based on just a few choice backlinks.

As you can see, RichTC seems slightly discouraged about MSN Search, or at least the ability to outrank quality sites with other, less qualified sites. It seems to me that if you focus your SEO efforts on the big 2, MSN’s rankings will take care of themselves.

SEO Vs PPC

A recent article entitled troubled times for SEO firms by David Pasternack of Did-It.com seems to have opened up a bit of a debate over at the Search Engine Watch Forums.

David makes a case for PPC being more challenging than SEO which has brought much debate from those of either side of search engine marketing.

“Unlike Paid Search, in which it’s a requisite to continually monitor and optimize one’s campaign in order to navigate through a dynamic auction-based environment, SEO is a job that is essentially a one-time task, not a continuing responsibility requiring the services of an outside firm”.

Ouch. Lets just say, not all agreed with that particular argument. David has 3 main points why the SEO industry is ailing -

1. Marketers Are Discovering That SEO Isn’t Rocket Science
2. Marketers Are Realizing That SEO is a “Fix-it-Once” Task, not an Ongoing Service
3. Marketers Are Wary of Pushing the SEO Envelope

Rustybrick over at the SERoundtable has analysed each point and given his thoughts, which are fairly on the fence but he makes a good point. Neither are exactly rocket science, they just require well organised solid foundations to start with and to be continually analysed and optimised moving forward.

Much of Davids arguments make sense, but at the same time, they are far to sweeping, generalised and just miss reality. I did like this particular quote though -

“SEO practitioners like to view themselves as Jedi Knights who are magically endowed with powers which can magically decrypt the occult secrets of search engines’ algorithms. This glamorous self-image is reinforced each time the mainstream business press reports on their edgy antics. “

It’s an interesting debate as a whole, but one which is missing the greater picture; that neither SEO or PPC will be going anywhere in the world of search engine marketing. Both, make up a fundamental part of a SEM strategy, but there are other factors (paid inclusion, feeds, social media optimisation) which can be equally important to a SEM campaign in difference circumstances. Without looking at all techniques a business would be missing out on opportunities whatever way you look at it.

Three Questions to Ask Before Initiating an SEO Strategy

If you're actively pursuing a working strategy to get more search-referred traffic channeled to your Web site, then you're probably considering launching a major SEO (define) initiative.

Before you send your first requests for proposals or prepare to undertake the project in-house, consider what you're willing -- and not willing -- to do to improve your site's search engine positioning.

Let's start with the basics that will help determine your path toward building an SEO strategy. The first question you must ask yourself is, what are the business objectives for your Web site? Do you want to increase traffic, increase sales, improve visibility, generate leads, increase yielding pages, or something else?

Before you can set your sights on garnering greater search engine referrals, consider targeting specific areas of your business that can provide demonstrative results.

It's important that you be specific about your online business goals and objectives before you launch a natural search optimization program. It's equally important that you be as specific and realistic as possible.

If you want to increase sales by 5 percent, for example, you need to factor in current conversion rates, average sales, and current visitor data to get a good idea of how much more search-referred traffic you need to attain your goals. You should also be aware of where your site stands compared with industry standards.

You'd better have access to your site's Web stats to prepare SEO goals. Reviewing historical data is a critical step in establishing online business objectives. It's also a step you need to take to prepare to analyze SEO strategy results.

Elements to review include:

* Number of monthly visitors to your site

* Percentage of visitors originating from search engine referrals

* Number of sales per month

* Average sales value per visitor

* Total sales value

* Your site's conversion rates

Include any other metrics that relate to your business objectives. You might want to analyze historical seasonal peaks and valleys in online sales. If your online business has wild seasonal swings, consider how this could impact an SEO implementation schedule. You don't want to set yourself up to fail by trying to allocate internal or external resources when they're already stretched thin due to seasonal demands.

Web analytics should also provide insight into your target audiences' demographics. A search strategy varies greatly if the primary target audience consists of tweens or baby boomers. By associating a value to core demographic elements of your business, you can equally prioritize SEO strategy elements.

If you don't have a Web analytics package in place, get something up and running now. There are plenty of options available on the Web. Just remember, you get what you pay for. Don't bother building an SEO strategy until you know where your site stands. Without proper benchmarking, you'll never know if your strategy worked or not.

The beauty of implementing a natural SEO strategy is when your plan is complete, search referrals tend to keep growing long after the bulk of the work is done. Unlike PPC (define) campaigns that can produce immediate results, it takes time for a wholly optimized site to reach maturity.

This brings us to the final question you must ask prior to commending an SEO strategy: how far are you willing to go to improve your site's search-referred traffic?

Consider what parts of your site are sacred. What particular site portions or functions can or can't be modified? If there are significant SEO benefits, would you consider modifying the content and the design of your site?

Making content or design changes to the home page and other high-level site pages can dramatically enhance search engine visibility. Are you willing and technologically able to revise your site's structure and navigation to achieve better search engine positioning? How much flexibility do you have with page and linking structures built into the current site?

Elements to consider include the site URL structure and what rules or style guides are in place for design and layout. Are you able to dedicate resources to making SEO changes on your native Web site? A good SEO plan should be able to adapt to a site's ability to change, but a great SEO strategy includes the "whys" behind the recommendations and what happens when tradeoffs occur.

If you've done your homework, assessed your business objectives, analyzed your site statistics, and considered what you're willing to change on your site, you're ready to take the next step and find a business partner who will help build your SEO strategy.

The search engines are actively referring self-qualified traffic to sites like yours right now. Are you ready to get your fair share out of search?

How to SEO for Beginners

Selecting Key Words

This is probably the most important point. You need to choose keywords that best describes your website so if someone types your keyword in a search engine, your site will come up. Now don’t just pick a few keywords which best interests you.

Try this Keyword Suggestion Tool

Lets say your site is about Games. Now don’t just make ‘Games’ as your keyword because it is searched 99, 000 each day. There is very little chance your site will appear in a search any where near the first page. I suggest you pick more specific keywords such as ‘PlayStation Games’ or a name of an actual game like ‘Grand Theft Auto’. These names are searched not as much so there is a lot of chance your site will appear near or on the first page of a search engine.
Domain

You should have a suitable domain name. It is not as important but still works. Going back to Games site again. You are better off with a domain name such as www.games.com rather than www.yourhostname.com/games.com. The domain name has nothing to do with your search engine optimism, you can still reach page one with or without a good domain name.
Title Tags

Very crucial in Search Engine Optimization. Going back to the Games site. You are better off with a title such as:

Game - Grand Theft Auto

rather than:

Grand Theft Auto - Games or Grand Theft Auto or Whatever
Header Tags

Header tags are very important because they are used to identify words which are more important than the rest of the text on the page. The Header Tags sum up the topic of the page. When you are placing Header Tags, use ‘H1' tags.

For Example, lets go back to the Games site again. You want your Header Tag as ‘Games’ then you will do the following: Games
Easy URLs

Very important in search engine optimization. You want to have simple URLs, no long complicated stuff.

For Example in stead of this: www.games.com/GrandTheftAuto/index.php

You will write: www.games.com/GrandTheftAuto/

Easy URLs: make sure you use correct keywords. For example going back to the Games site, make sure you mention something or probably everything related to games. When a search engine spider comes and sees that your page is suppose to be about Games but you haven’t mentioned about Games, he/she will think your site is not important. Have a paragraph or two about your site on top of your page, making sure you state the correct keywords that best matches your website.
Link Building

Make sure you have lots of links coming to your site. When a search engine comes to a website and notices that in it’s links there is a ‘Games’ link. He/she will click and it will lead him/her to your site. This will make him/her think that your site is very important. When you are building links, make sure you use correct keywords that best describes your website.
A Few Tips

A few tips by the professionals:

-For start ups use things like: Digit, reddit and ma.gnolia they all give a little traffic if your site is new
-Quality Backlinks and Trusted Links
-Putting the keywords in the title
-One Way links.

SEO: Business School Of Thought, Not A Process

Search engine optimization is no longer a process - it is a business school of thought - a philosophy. SEO is a thought process of using specific search marketing tools and principles for creating a successful business.

SEO is making specific business decisions based on previous knowledge that will ultimately impact bottom line profitability.

Many "SEO's" have went through a fairly specific lifecycle of becoming successful entreprenuers. Stumble into the web. Learn SEO fundamentals. Apply SEO. Rinse. Repeat. Apply to personal or affiliate projects. Start a new business based on SEO principles. Re-apply SEO. It's a shame we don't have a cool fancy term for what many seasoned SEO's turn into.

Fundamental philsophies of the SEO school of thought

* It's all about the links

* It's all about the traffic

* It's all about the conversion

These principles are used when making nearly any business decision to someone from the SEO school of thought. These newly evolved thought processes directly conflict with some of the principles from previous marketing schools of thought.

I spend far too much time wondering why most the world views SEO as black magic, while so many within our industry (including myself) hold such high regard for the top level SEO practitioners. After a lot of pondering and discussion on why SEO's are viewed as shady worthless criminals, I have come to the conclusion that search engine optimization may still be a process, - but I'm convinced SEO is a school of thought.

Most people view SEO is a mystical process (which it's not) - what IS mystical is the creative ideas that come from some of the top minds in the field by applying the principles to business. THIS is magic - because no one with out the SEO school of thought would ever stop to think of them. SEO's are the brains and inspiration behind many web 2.0 business models. Sometimes these innovators aren't even aware that they are applying SEO principles.

Just as psychology has various schools of thought, business does as well. Marketing, advertising, and management all have their theorists. I'm sure SEO could be classified into the first two, but there are many areas where it is different.

The BEST SEO's

are not SEO's at all. They are now successful entrepreneurs and businesspeople. Many of them that owe a large part of their success to organic rankings will always claim "to be an SEO", or to "know SEO". They are always looking for other folks who have the same philosphy - unfortunately it's hard to hire them, or keep them for very long due to the entrepreneurial spirit it takes to learn the SEO philosophy. From Brian Provost at scoreboardmedia: The better I got at SEO, the less I did of it

"SEO's are the new real estate developers. Our skillset gives us an amazing opportunity to develop an audience on the cheap."

SEO has become a conduit to learn business

For our brief history of time - a window of opportunity opened. Over the last 10 years, the barrier to entry to learning business, and all it's backroom antics has been opened up to a select group of people.

The nature of SEO requires that a business provide their SEO person with an abundance of important information for making decisions. The need for this transperancy has taught lots of SEO's some of the finer points of business. I know I have learned a LOT about business from some of the great clients I've had over the years. Since I learned a majority of this through my understanding of SEO - I consider many of these business principles that I learned a PART of SEO.

Why SEO is blackmagic, and most folks will never "get it"

-The don't abide by the principles above.

-They think links are solely for clickthrough.

-They have never tweaked a title tag.

-They've never performed a link request, or hunted for links.

-They have their own school of thought that they don't want to stray from.

-Search is a threat to their business model.

SEO is a noun, verb, and adjective

I am an SEO.

I need SEO services

I need my site "SEO'd"

It's an seo site.

The process of search engine optimization is straightforward and easy; the understanding of the SEO thought process is ongoing and exceedingly complex.

Additional resources:

This is sort of continuation from the "SEO is a catchphrase" series a while back.

I was nearly finished with this post when I stumbled across the fact that Randall at 14th colony also thinks SEO is a school of thought. The power of the internet and having similar independant thoughts simultaneously is really strange and amazing sometimes. My apologies for the similar title - I have been thinking about this one for months, and was astonished to come across your great post.

My previous claims about SEO: There is no such thing as SEO.

Anybody else have examples of how SEO is more than just a process now?

Guide for SEO, PR, Traffic, and Link Building!

Here are some good tips to success:

1. Put your site in Web Directories, those are just like phonebooks but with use to your website. Find ones that have good PR( Pagerank from 0-10) like PR 3+ and if your site is indexed your PR will increase.

2. Get lots of backlinks, this is a nice way to go. Basically if you post a lot on a forum and put a link on your signature you should get some backlinks depending on how many posts you get.

3. Try to buy links on high PR sites.

4. Submit to multiple search engines such as Google, MSN, Yahoo, and Altavista.

5. Use the Google Webmaster My Site program, and add your site to it. Then create a sitemap and they will Index your site on Google Search engine.

6. Learn how to use Link exchanges. This will get you some traffic.

7. Send messages to friends or people you know, this will get lots of traffic. Most of your friends will love to join your site.

8. You need to do lots of advertising. To do this get a text link or make a small banner. Then pay people to put it up on there site, or even trade posts for advertising.

9. A good way to get a link without any money on someone's site is to maybe post 50 on there forum, then ask for a link on there footer. In a month or so, you will see this paid off, because youre site may have an extra quality direct link and will be indexed in search engines.

10. Find something interesting, and put it on your site. For my site www.prdeal.com I have news updates on the homepage on interesting topics such as snake venom to top money makers. This draws attention.

11. Get loads of fresh content. Google loves this. What I mean by this is to just update your site, make changes and improve a lot!

12. Have a nice theme, people don't like regular plain themes, but colorful ones such as the subsilver theme for phpBB is dull but the subblack theme is better.

13. Keep to your site, and don't just throw it off. This will site that you don't care for it and neither will the users.

14. Find a way to keep your users entertained. On my site I have about 150+ arcade games to play along with chat rooms, tv stations, award shop!

15. Get something that makes some members feel special. Like for my website I have the Elite Members Club by paying $2-$25 or making 300+ posts you can be one. Elite members get special forums, names, title colors, access and much more!

16. Get something that will get users posting. I have FP Gold on my site that you can sell for services instead of money. These can be earned by posting more, and can be used for graphic designs, services, forum posting, script creation, website help, contests, link sales, signature sales, advertising, and way more!

17. Patience, this is the most revered thing in Web Devoloping, it requires a lot of patience and time.

Cocaine Energy Drink Like Red Bull or Rockstar Energy Drinks x10!!

cocaine energy drink

Cocaine Energy Drink is the hottest new product to hit the market. It’s creating HUGE buzz in the news and is extremely controversial. Some people don’t like the name, while others think the Cocaine Energy Drink comes too close to the feeling of being on cocaine. The drink has over 3 times the caffeine that any energy drink on the market currently contains., and a slight throat numbing effect. This Cocaine Energy drink is sold out every where and extremely difficult to find. While some legislators and activists are trying to stop the Cocaine Drink from hitting store shelves others are scrambling to find it and try it. Some people describe it as a Fruity atomic fireball others like, some don’t. But with such a huge amount of caffeine the energy rush is definitely something to be careful with!

StartupJournal Gives Bad SEO Advice

There was a Q/A article in the Wall Street Journal's StartupJournal site on search engine optimization that I've been meaning to respond to for a few weeks now.

A good question was posed by a small business owner who was confused about search engine optimizers and whether they were worth it.

There seem to be two schools of thought from journalists on the topic of SEO. Those that slant it towards evil, worthless and shady. And those that check their facts and present those facts. I'll let you decide what angle the writer from the StartupJournal was coming from on your own.

The question posed:

"We own a dance-wear Internet store and are completely confused about search-engine optimizers. Are they of value to a smaller company, like us? One optimizer quoted us $40,000 to enhance our Web site and improve our ranking."

The writer's response:

"Here's the risk: You shell out $40,000 hiring a search-engine optimizer to revamp your Web site in hopes of improving your search rankings, only to end up still buried in page four of Google search results for your products."

You know how people sometimes state an improbable possibility to make a point or seem important? That's what the StartupJournal writer's response reminds me of.

There's risk with anything. There's a risk that a $1.2m TV commercial might not generate brand awareness and sales, there's risk that $80,000 spent on a new car is a waste as it depreciates $20,000 as its driven it off the lot and there's a risk in subscribing to the Wall Street Journal and getting crappy, incomplete reporting.

She follows up with a gem: So it's usually not worth spending wads of money on consultants that can't somehow guarantee you'll appear at or near the top of rankings.

Google has something to say about that sort of thing: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google." Where's a fact checker when you need one?

A quote from a buyer of SEO services says in the article, "You really have to be careful about who you hire, Mr. Kitchen says. They dont all do the same quality of work."

That's good advice, but in what industry is it not true? Recruiting agencies do not all do the same quality of work, mechanics don't all do the same quality of work. Heck, I hate to say it but heart surgeons don't all do the same quality of work. Why would it be any different about SEO? There are many search engine optimizers that do fantastic work. Just ask their clients.

Admittedly, most of the rest of the article provides good advice - albeit coming from a SEO firm, not the writer.

There is an interesting recommendation for small business owners to try and boost their own rankings on their own and if not successful, to seek out a professional. Hmm. Seems risky to me.

What if I try to fix my car and if it doesn't work out, I'll hire a professional. Or try to fix the programming in my database generated site. If it doesn't work out, I'll hire a professional. I'll even have a go at installing a new phone system in my office. If it doesnt work out, I'll hire a professional. There's no harm in that, is there? Right?

Bzzzz. Wrong answer. Have you ever had to fix what someone else was trying to fix? It's often much, much worse than if you had brought in an expert to start with.

The last line cracks me up: "Remember, you can always resort to paid search results using programs such as Google's pay-per-click AdWords program instead of spending thousands on natural rankings."

Clearly this is the clincher that the writer's knowledge of SEO does not extend past the bubbly goo in the black cauldron she's stirring. (tip the Halloween thing, pretty good eh?). Better advice would be to start a PPC campaign right away and get some data to use for refining the SEO while making sales.

I propose we have a SEO education day for the press. We could put together a webinar to help journalists get the facts before being tempted to take creative license to slant a story for the sake of attracting readers. Not that anyone does that. :)

This post is a bit loopy, I know. I've had 6 speaking gigs in 7 days on both coasts and I'm a bit short on sleep.

Essential Steps to Running A Business Online

With e-commerce at an all time high, many people are hoping to cash in by opening their own websites. However many soon find themselves left high and dry. How can one succeed in the cut throat business on online e-tail stores?

Many people start a website in hopes of discovering new found riches. However most are quick to learn that running your own website is far more difficult than just getting a catchy name and good content. To make a website work one must advertise.

The first thing a webmaster must do when they publish a website is to list it with the search engines. This may be an obvious thing to some, but you may be surprised how many people overlook this very simple step and wonder why no one is visiting their site. While there are hundreds of search engines out there just focus on the important ones like Google, Yahoo, and MSN.

Second to get a lot of traffic one must develop link popularity. Google assigns a pagerank to each website. The higher the pagerank, the more important it is considered to be and in turn ranks higher in relevant search engine results. When a website ranks in the top ten search results for a particular keyword it will receive excellent free traffic which is a priceless asset.

One can develop link popularity by exchanging links with others, listing on directories, through classified ads, or placing ads on other websites. Do not buy into brokers that offer thousands of links as Google will often ban these links. Aim to list on higher page pages with a pager rank of 4 or greater. This will help you out greatly because links on higher page rank sites make your site score higher than if you linked to a hundred lower rank websites. It usually takes about 4 months for Google to update pagerank so don't panic if you don't see an immediate change.

When selling products harness the power of eBay. With more than 80 million page views a month one can't ask for greater publicity. Online shopping malls are a good choice but make sure they have validity. Check their page rank and traffic and make sure you are listing on a site that actually receives real visitors looking for real products.

The most powerful and popular method of advertising is Google AdWords. Simply create a short ad and choose the keywords it will be displayed under. Next, set an advertising budget. The ad will be displayed on relevant websites and also in the first pages of search engine results. Webmasters are in full control over how much they want to spend daily, when they want the ad to run, and where they want the ad to run. This also builds great link popularity.

It will take some time to get the right combination for what works best to produce profits for a website business, but when one finds that combination the payoff is great. All it takes is a little patience and a lot of knowledge and soon your biggest worry will be what to do with all the extra money you make.

How to sell your domain name quickly

Everyday I read this question on different forums "how I sell my domain quickly?" To me earning huge income from domain and selling it quickly are two different things, and you have to select one. Many newbie register a domain in the hope that next day someone will purchase it in two million dollars, which is obviously nonsense. If you are not successful in domain business, forget everything you learn about domain trading so far and start a fresh in a scientific way. Now I explain the whole thing step by step.

Domain Acquisition

Always try to backorder an expired domain instead of registering a new one. Expired domains are already listed on search engines and most have some traffic so you can sell them on high price. If you have registered a new domain the maximum sale price of this domain will be 60$. Domain name is a highly fluctuating market so it doesn't mean that above rule is always applicable.

Never ask too much for your domain

If you want to sell your domain on an auction never ask too much in the beginning. Your customer will freak out when he will see the price tag of 10000$ for a domain which has no traffic. But there are some exceptions to this rule especially if your domain is already receiving 100,000 hits a month then ball is in your court you can demand anything for it. Domains with low or now traffic as I said shouldn't ask too much in the beginning.

Sell domain and website together

In domain name industry supply is far much than demand. Selling website with domain add a good value to your domain. If someone wants to start a forum first of all he will purchase domain name, hosting and setting up forum application. But if you are giving everything in a single price there is highly possibility of your domain sale.

Sell Domain as a package

Sometimes including different kinds of goodies with domain work really well. Few days before I sold a domain name. I included my reseller package with it which contain ebooks, scripts and software and sold whole stuff in 50$ within a week of domain registration.

Words are most important

If you are going to register a domain, make sure you have proper combination of words. For example, I registered a domain prdeal.com two days before everyone can easily remember it but if I use words such prdeal342.com or 24pr4deal.com I am sure it took me many months to sell this kind of domains. So domains which can be remembered easily has great chances of sell quickly

Where to sell domain name

Here are few places where you can sell domain name

http://forums.digitalpoint.com (Recommended)
http://www.sitepoint.com (They charge for domain listing)
http://www.webhostingtalk.com
http://www.sedo.com (Not a suitable place if your domain price is less than $300)

Payment Mechanism

I hate to mention this but if you want to sell a domain you must have paypal account. This is the only way to receive payment instantly.

Making Money From Domain Names

When the DNS was new, domain registrations were free. A domain owner can generally give away or sell infinite [[subdomain]]s of their domain, e.g. the owner of example.edu could provide domains that are subdomains, such as foo.example.edu and foo.bar.example.edu.

An economic effect of the widespread usage of cheap domain names has been the resale market for generic domain names that has sprung up in the last decade. Certain domains, especially those related to business, gambling, pornography, and other commercially lucrative fields have become very much in demand to corporations and entrepreneurs due to their intrinsic value in attracting clients.

In fact, the most expensive Internet domain name to date, according to Guinness World Records, is business.com which was resold in 1999 for $7.5 million. Another high value domain name, sex.com, was stolen from its rightful owner by means of a forged transfer instruction via fax.

During the height of the dot-com era, the domain was earning millions of dollars per month in advertising revenue from the large influx of visitors that arrived daily. Two long-running U.S. lawsuits resulted, one against the thief and one against the domain registrar VeriSign[1].

In one of the cases, Kremen v. Network Solutions, the court found in favor of the plaintiff, leading to an unprecendented ruling that classified domain names as property, granting them the same legal protections. In 1999, Microsoft traded the valuable name Bob.com for the name Windows2000.com which was the name of their new operating system.[2]

One of the reasons for the value of domain names is that even without advertising or marketing, they attract clients seeking services and products who simply type in the generic name. Furthermore, generic domain names such as Rent.com or Books.com are extremely easy for potential customers to remember, increasing the probability that they become repeat customers or regular clients.

Although the current domain market is nowhere as strong as it was during the dot-com heyday, it remains strong and is currently experiencing solid growth again. Annually tens of millions of dollars change hands due to the resale of domains. Large numbers of registered domain names lapse and are deleted each year. On average 25,000 domain names drop (are deleted) every day.

It is high time that YOU (yes I mean you!) consider getting yourself a cheap domain name as well. You can do that at iPower.com or at the World's Largest Registrar - GoDaddy.com but you need to do that soon.

20 Linkbaiting Techniques

As I’ve mentioned numerous times already in this series on linkbaiting - ‘linkbait’ is a term that is used to describe a variety of practices that have the purpose of generating links to your site.

It is impossible to come up with a definitive list of what these practices are as they are only limited to the imagination of website and blog owners.

Below I outline 20 of the more common linkbaiting techniques that I’ve seen (and used).

Sponsored Links: Project4Hire.com is the place to find Freelance Programmers, Web Designers, Graphic Artists, IT Professionals, Translators, Writers, Consultants & other Freelance Professionals. If you have a project you need help on, you’ve come to the right place. Find qualified freelancers willing to do the job within your budget! Post your project for free and receive bids.

A couple of things first:

Please note that in describing them I don’t necessarily endorse them all. It’s worth saying up front that like many aspects of the web, the tactics that people use vary quite a bit in terms of what they see as ethical or acceptable behaviour.
Also note that some people use these techniques with the motivation of getting links where as others do them without such motivation. While they are described by some as linkbait many of them are just activities that bloggers and webmasters use in their day to day work.
Here are 20 linkbaiting techniques that are commonly used (please note - points in the following list are not mutually exclusive, there is overlap between many of them).

Tools - give other website owners a useful, fun or cool tool that they can use on their blog that points back to your own. A prime example of this was the blog worth tool that Dane from Business Opportunities developed that tells how much a blog is worth based on Technorati’s API (used by thousands of bloggers (google shows 27,000+ links pointing to it) - most of whom posted the button that the tool provides (with a link back to his blog).

Quizzes - quizzes, surveys and tests have long been popular with web users and if you’re smart about the way you design them (giving people a button to place on their site for example) they can be quite viral. I ran my recent ProBlogger quiz as a quick test of a plugin and saw it bring in quite a few links - if I’d given participants a button and given it some more thought it would have been even more successful).

Contests - organise something for people to participate in and you’ll find that some will. Add a competitive element to it and offer a worthwhile prize and you might just find the participation rate increases. My recent group writing projects (with prizes) is an illustration of this (although they’re not strictly competitions). Over 300 people submitted entries in my lists project and in the current one there’s already 150+, most of whom linked back to ProBlogger to show their participation (even though I didn’t make it compulsory to do so).

Be First - if you’re the first in your niche to do, say or be something you’re likely to be linked to heavily by others in your niche. Being second, third, forth…. in your niche to do, say or be something will generally have less impact. For example take a look at the success of the Million Dollar Homepage in contrast to the main thousands of copycat pixel advertising sites that followed. Another example was the One Red Paperclip guy.

Scoops - related to being first is breaking a story in your niche. Break a big enough story and the amount of others that link to you giving you credit for being the source of their own news posts can be quite massive.

Exposé - similarly - expose a fraud or scammer and you can create a real buzz around your blog and become part of the news itself. I’m sure there are a few political bloggers out there that would identify their ‘big break’ as exposé blogging when they exposed one politician or another of doing or saying something that showed them for what they’re worth.

Awards - At the beginning and end of every year in blogging circles a silly season of awards happens (last year there were so many that I created ProBlogger’s Awards for Blog Awards). While not all awards work well, many do particularly well at generating a buzz (with lots of traffic and lots of incoming links). They do it on a number of levels. In the first part they generate links from those hoping to be nominated - then they generate links from people who have been nominated who try to get votes - then they generate links from winners showing off and others complaining about the winners…. the waves of incoming links to a good awards can be quite fascinating to watch.

Lists - I’ve written extensively on lists before so won’t go into it in much detail - but of late many examples of blog posts that seem to get a lot of link attention are very list oriented pieces. There is just something about a list that people latch onto, digest and want to pass on to others (just check out digg and delicious and you’ll see plenty of examples). Of course these days list posts are a dime a dozen so you’ll need to make your list useful and stand out in some way. If you do (and you have a little luck) you’ll be well on the way to being linked to.

Humor - some of the best linkbait that I’ve seen has a humorous edge to it. Whether it be a cartoon (Hugh does this well - I’ve seen his blog linked to numerous time today alone), a funny photo, a story or even a title that gets a laugh - people enjoy humor and like to pass it on (it’s something we’ve been doing for centuries in the stories/jokes we tell).

Make someone famous - I’m still trying to get my head around this one but one of the reasons why I think my group projects seem to do well is that they offer people the opportunity the chance of being discovered (of course the prizes help - but some people feed back to me that the main reason they participate is the traffic and incoming links that it can potentially bring). Another example of this is BlogTopSites.com (and other sites like it) which rank pages in different categories. I suspect that a lot of people participate in these sites (and link to them) because they want to see how they rank with other blogs and have hopes of climbing the rankings.

Create belonging/community - people like to belong and they desire community. Give them a place where they do have community (or at least feel that they have it) and they’ll quite often link to it from their blogs. For example, I find here at ProBlogger that people quite often link to the comments sections of my posts (more specifically to comment threads that they themselves have participated in) rather than the post itself. I also see this illustrated by a lot of bloggers who participate in (and link to) discussion forums.

Design - those people clever enough to design something that others use in large numbers can do quite well out of it in terms of incoming links. For example a good blog theme/template (with an inbuilt link to it’s designer) that is picked up and used widely can create an avalanche of incoming links. I’ve seen a number of designers who have had their work picked up as default themes at WordPress.com comment upon the many many thousands of links that this brought them.

Rants - there is something about a well written, well argued and passionate rant that is very link worthy. People get stirred up when you get passionate and the links will often flow as a result. Of course when you write a rant you need to expect that people will react both positively and negatively (and there is often fallout).
Controversy - similarly, controversial posts tend to get strong reactions from those reading your posts. I discovered this very early in my blogging when I innocently wrote a short piece with some of my thoughts on the Iraq war on a blog I was running at the time. I didn’t expect any reaction and was surprised to wake up the following morning to find it had caused a massive stir in the Blog community with hundreds of bloggers linking up either to support or criticise what I’d written. Again - controversy brings in all kinds of responses. Don’t do it just for the sake of being controversial unless you have very thick skin!

Attack - while we’re talking about controversy - another common way to get attention for yourself is to pick a fight with another blogger in the hope of tempting them (and others) to ‘bite’ back. I’ve seen this approach get a number of emerging bloggers on the map in the past 12 months - but would warn those wanting to give it a go that there can be significant fallout from the approach and that you’ll want to consider whether you want to build your reputation around your snarkyness or some other characteristic. If you’re going to build a blog purely on snark you need to be ready for the snark to come back at you and should realize that it’s difficult to sustain.

Shock - ok, I’m obviously pooling these together but using shock tactics is yet another linkbaiting technique that some people use quite effectively. People have been doing this for years in other mediums (’shock jocks’ in Radio for example) so it is no wonder that they’re doing it on the web as well. Shocking via language, extreme views, showing controversial or titillating pictures or video etc all fall into this category. Once again, I’m not really into this type of blogging and wouldn’t want to build a reputation around it - but it’s definitely a tactic that some use with real effect.

Research and Statistics - researching a topic that has popularity and that people can use in some way is another effective way to generate incoming links. While it’s may not be strictly research - Dave Sifry’s periodic ‘state of the blogosphere‘ posts are widely linked to and quoted from because he is presenting interesting statistics that directly apply to something people are passionate about.

Give something away - think about the buzz that Oprah created when she gave every audience member a car a couple of years back and you see the power of what happens when you give something away. While giving every reader you have an extravagant gift like that might not be possible - the clever giving of gifts can definitely create a buzz.

Usefulness - writing something ‘useful’ is a pretty general thing to say (and would be incorporated above in many places) however I think it’s worth saying. The more useful your content is to people the more likely they are to want to pass it on to others. Show someone how to do something, give them knowledge, entertain them and/or improve their lives and/or be better at something and you’ll be amazed at how they’ll rave about you.

Cool Factor - as I look at what seems to get linked to by bloggers I’d say that a fair proportion of it isn’t particularly ‘useful’ (or anything else in this list) - it’s just ‘cool’. Of course ‘coolness’ is difficult to define or achieve (it seems to just happen) but if you are cool (or do something that is) you might just find yourself getting linked up to.

Like I said in my introductory paragraphs - a definitive list of linkbaiting techniques (and examples) is impossible to achieve. The above 20 types of linkbait are just the beginning of the ways that bloggers get links from other sites (sometimes they do it intentionally with the motivation to get links and sometimes its just byproduct). I’d love to hear your suggestions on linkbaiting techniques that you’ve seen used (or used yourself). Feel free to give an example or two also.
